No fire coming from the pickup coil.

I have a question about the TB 330.. just bought a 2003 that had been sitting for nearly a yr... Did all the little things , like clean the carburator, new plug.. new battery, clean gas .. Would finally get it to start, but ran bad, backfiring and then would shut off...and haven't been able to get it started since... Now I'm not getting fire from the pickup coil... When I called about having it replaced, I was told with that model I would have to buy the entire stater plate assembly kit ($321.21 w/tax)... is there no way to replace the pickup coil without having to spend that much.... Also, before I invest in that should I have them test my CDI first?....I'm no pro when it comes to this, but learning as I go...Can anyone give me some advice?.... Thanks a million....

Well, if you are not getting the signal from the pickup coil, then the CDI cannot do its job. So, if the pick up coil is truly not sending up a signal, then I would say it is the culprit. I am a little surprised to hear that it is bad though.

Like Polaridoo said - seems hard to believe the pickup is bad on a machine this new. There are resistance tests you can perform with an ohm meter to check the condition of the coils and stator - I don't have the spec's on the 330, but someone may. Now might be a good time to invest in the service manual for this machine - before you jump in and spend big $$ on replacing parts.

Thanks for the reply quadwrench... I tested the coils with the ohm meter, that is how I found that the pick up coil was not firing....What would cause the pickup coil to go bad?... Like I said before, this bike did sit for nearly a yr, would that have anything to do with it...It was also rode pretty hard before it was parked...I just didn't realize that to replace the pickup coil I had to replace the stator plate as well....Would something else be causing the pickup coil from not firing?

On the earlier engine models, they used the same stator assembly as all the 4 stroke engines - and the pulse coil could be replaced separate of the stator assembly - that pulse coils run about $60 - might be something to look into? There are also companies out there that make aftermarket replacements for the pulse coils - Yamaha is another one that is bad about wanting you to buy the the whole thing and these people make them for the Yami's as well as others - you might do a search and find one to contact about what you are facing.
