My noob question.

Is there any real difference between the atv oil they sell at the dealership and automotive oil? Is it safe to use auto oil?

 

The guy peddling atv and motorcycle specific oil at the stealership will tell you there is a huge difference...LOL. In reality, the only auto oils you wanna stay away from is 5w-30 and 10w-30 because they have "energy conserving" ingrediants that some clutches do not like.

what do you mean energy conserving ingredients? my builder reccomended 5w-30 for transmission oil and it seems to work great.

 

Several years back federal law required gasoline makers too start producing "cleaner" gasoline. The only problem with the cleaner fuel is that approx 10% of fuel economy was lost. Govt applied pressure too oil companies and passed laws that would mandate oil companies come up with a "slicker" oil that creates less friction. This was an attempt too get back some of the lost fuel economy. ALL conventional oils that are 5W-30 and 10W-30 are of this formulation. All of these oils have a "sunburst" designated on the front of the container....usually the lower right. I have rode my Raptor with 10w-30 oil no problem....but SOME clutches do not work well with the energy conserving oil. I always ran Dexron 3 auto tranny oil in my 2 strokes with no probs. Shifts like butter too.

thnx for the info. ive been thinkin about switchin to some gear saver anyways because builder reccommended changing every two weeks.

 

so, is it safe to say that it is ok to use the energy saver oil in a raptor? Cause that is the bike i will be needing to change oil in regularly.

 

while we are on the topic. The Guy at My "stealership" told me last week when I bought my Raptor that I only need to change the oil once a year..... How the hell is that true? Can anyone back up this argument.?

 

I guess if you only ride it once a year, only one change is needed.

Next time your in the dealership snap your fingers and wake this guy up because he has been hypnotized by a another honda dealer to tell you that.

 

So then how often should the change intervals be.. And what If I decide to use AMSOIL??
