01 Raptor port and polish
#1
Guys(and Gals) I would like to attempt a port and polish on the 01 buuuut.(1).Will it really make a difference in the way it runs(2) is this something I should let a pro shop do(I have all the tools) (3) Is there anything I should do or know before I start this project.(4) Will it require a jet change...I am going to get rid of my White Bros R4 slip on and go with either a full Yoshi system or a full CT Racing system(Havent decided yet)...Has anyone tried this yet...AHHHHHHH

Without using a flow bench, you may do more harm than good. Unless you're just talking about doing a mild cleanup of the ports. Then I'd just take off a little material from the roof and around the bowl area. I doubt there is much to be gained without using more compression and camshaft though. If you want to talk to a professional about it, contact one of the best Raptor builders in the country. Ken at KENZ CYCLE TECH in Mesa, AZ.

i would also encourage you to read these next few links, an interesting idea behind porting,

and his method seems to have paid off on his racing bikes.
Most modern engines already have more than enough flow in the stock ports. What they need is more velocity. I've intentionally made the ports so small that they flowed 8% less than the stock ports. These high velocity ports always make the best midrange and top-end power !!

If you are looking for a major performance increase GO PROFESSIONAL, but I have done mild port and polish jobs myself. just cleaning it up, changing a cam, and piston, and pipe... and have gotten decent performance increases. Just a mild cleanup does help, but since it is all apart, I'd say bite the big one and go with a well recognized engine builder. I have dealt with Craycraft and Sparks racing. I will always be a loyal Craycraft customer. There are a lot of great builders out there.

if you have the extra money to attempt ur own porting....i would def. try it, if i had the money, porting doesnt seem overly hard...just gotta go slow, if you do, i would probly try to do what that one site has, mototuneUSA has, since there isnt a risk involved, cus if you dont like it, just grind off the extra epoxy(or jbweld i think its called) away till you get the stock porting back.

Talk to any good engine builder and they will tell you about the heads they threw away during port work developement. Like a Raptor builder I talked to that said "Once we opened that particular port from 23mm up to 30mm we lost power, then found that it worked best at 27.5mm in size." You pay them not just for their work but for their trial and error to arrive at their working formula.
Of course, you might get lucky and get it right on your first guess.
But you might end up running slower, throwing out your head, buying another, then sending it to get ported by someone else. It's your call.
