Sputtering around 2000-4000rpms
#1
I was having trouble in West Virginia this past weekend. My X would sputter between 2000-4000rpm's then take off like a rocket just past 4000 rpm's. This got a little scary on the very steep and sharp turned mountain climb sections, especially the sputtering. It felt as if the machine was fighting for air. This wouldn't happen unless the machine was under load of a pretty steep uphill section that had to be negotiated slowly at first. I set the clip of the needle up one position and this seemed to help somewhat, but the sputter was still there a bit at the very end of the steep uphill. Was the higher altitude the problem? Should I have set the needle clip one more position higher? Any help would be appreciated.

most likely it was actually rich. If everything is stock then the clip on the highest position with the spacer above the clip removed will work best at 5000 feet and up. I ride at St. Anthony alot 5-6000 feet and find that to work best. If you go higher than 6000 you will most likely find it to run best with a smaller main jet.
