Default got a dilema guys, what would you do

about 2 weeks ago i traded a guy a 83 honda 250r 3 wheeler, a rifle, and $400 cash for a 2002 banshee. i rode it around a few times and everything seamed fine. took it out last weekend and it was running fine for a while. started only firing on one cylinder and ended up dying totally by the end of the day. took it home put plugs in it and it wouldnt start. i saw some wiring that didnt look good where the TORS was and disconnected it totally from the black box under the tank. it started up but wouldnt idlegood. i ripped it up and down the street a few times and as i was pulling in the driveway i let out the clutch to go over a bump. when i let it out the motor bogged and i heard a pop and it stalled. it was recommended to take apart the carbs and give them a good cleaning which i did. still nothing. i think im getting gas as the plugs are wet when i pull them. im getting blue spark. i sprayed a little gas in the cylinders and it would start for a sec then die. i did a compression check and on one side it was 65 the other 75 but this was on a cold motor as it wont run to warm it up. so im thinkin top end.
so i figured while its down for the rebuild i ll get the paper work started and went to the DMV and got the papers. i go to fill them out and look for the VIN on the frame and there isnt one. on the motor its partly gone and the rest has been hit with a punch to mar it up.
so now ive got a quad that probrobly needs a top end and i cant register because it may be hot. i called the guy i got it from and bitched and he was like "well it was as is, the motor ran when you picked it up and i told you i didnt have the papers for it." which he did say but said i could just go to DMV and reapply for them.
i called him today about trading back and he was like" well i ll trade the 3 wheeler and gun but not the cash because now ive gotta fix it."

if it was the good old days id just go and take the stuff back or show up with the cops.

what would you guys do??

thanks

Yep, sounds like you got raw deal...... So call him back and ask him if its hot? If it is he's in big trouble, because you can't go around selling stolen property...... Did he give you a a bill of sale?

yeah, im raw and pissed. he didnt know if it was stolen. he said he got it from the guy and the guy was waiting for paper work. he went back to get it after a while and there was a note on the door that said "moved to florida" he paid $3500 for it 8 months ago so i think he got more of a raw one then me. ive only got about $1700 tied up so far.

no i didnt get a bill of sale, wasnt expecting trouble. but then again who ever does. i learned.

im thinkin maybe i should make him give the cash back for the top end rebuild.

Oh and one more thing. Your compression is about half of what it should be.... Cold cranking compression is 130 psi at sea level and about 125 psi at 1000 ft above... This is compression on a stock engine with stock porting.....

yeah, unfortunately i know the compression is low. i remember reading 110 will run 145-160 on a fresh rebuild is about average. already got prices bore and hone is $90 and the top end kit is about $175.
im temped to just get the gun and trike back but then he ll have a fresh top end not me.

damn id like to hammer that guy just once.

if it was your 4 wheeler that someone else had bought and found out it was stolen what would you want them to do about it? we had our 4 wheelers stolen and i know if it was me i would turn this guy in so these people would have a chance of getting their stuff back, and make this guy pay for what he did.

Trust me. I am a police officer. (For Real)

Report this to the cops and your quad will be confiscated, and although you can sue the guy for your money back, you will likely loose unless you can proove he knew it was stolen. Happens everyday.

The end result will be you left with nothing.

As for the "condition" of the fourwheeler.....You bought it used from an individual and unless you have something in paperwork regarding a gurantee, he doesnt owe you anything. You will find out from others here that this is a cold hard fact.

i totally understand and i agree about turning in a thief but i know for a fact that the guy i got it off of didnt steel it or know if it was/is. hell, i still dont know. upon much more in depth inspection of the frame. i avent been able to find any numbers at all. no tags, no grind marks, no welded over areas, nothing. it looks as though it was in a good accident and rebuilt on another frame. one A arm is bent bad, steering stem, BIG smash into the front of the radiator but the front of the frame is straight as can be.
im going to ask DMV if i can take the frame somewhere and have someone check it over and issue a new number for it. i found numbers on the lower half of the motor but they were only casting numbers and not a VIN.
wish me luck.

like i said im still not even sure if it has any issues or not. it may be fine but i just dont have a VIN to check. i hear ya, but i cant afford to take that kind of loss. then id have to go f@#k that dude up bad and that would land me in jail in more trouble and i dont need that either.
im gonna find out about registering it as a "custom drag bike" or somethign along those lines. worst comes to worst i ll buy a frame with a title for a couple hundred, reassemble and be done with it.
