The warrior is low enough compression that you can run just about anything you like in it (except leaded gas...I've heard that will mess up the engine. I've also heard that automotive octane boost will mess up your engine too, but I haven't done any research on that).

My 450R needs 91, so I run 91 in my Warrior 'cause I'm lazy, and don't want to pump two different kinds of gas....

No, it won't hurt it in any way. In fact, it should help when the engine gets really hot. When it's really hot, I have starting issues and pinging on 87 octane.

89 should be perfect, you dont want it too high or it will burn too hot and will overheat quicker which can result in lost performance and too little wont burn hot enough which will result in the same thing. try 89 and see how it works out.

87 is fine, but then 20 cents or so more for 89 is cheap for a day of riding.

I run 93 in everything I own, my 01 Warrior runs great on 93.

Having worked for Exxon for several years I can tell you that higher octane will not make your bike run hotter, that is a total myth. The higher the octane rating the cooler the temperature at which the fuel ignites. It burns cleaner at a lower temperature and thus people assume it's "hotter" when in fact it's marginally cooler or exactly the same.

Higher octane is slightly less stress on valves and pistons because less phyiscal forced is used to reach the same level of compression. All in all these are maginal effects.

The real benefit will be seen in better fuel economy and less maintenance on things like valve adjustments and fuel filters. There will be less carbon based build up on internal engine parts and that means less repair and longer life. I never use regular in anything simply because I've seen the difference first hand in how they are refined. The regular is literally the crap that is left over after making the higher octane fuels.

ss97 is right. The octane rating doesn't burn hotter, nor does it give you more power. It contains the same amount of energy that regular gas has. The only difference (manufacturing differences aside) is that the additional octane prevents the combustion from happening at lower temperatures. I'm not sure if ss97 made a typo there or not...?

It is a misconception that the higher octane burns "hotter." In fact, the actual combustion temperatures are the same, if not lower, because the higher octane actually prevents the mixture from igniting before the ignition/spark forces it to. The earlier the mixture combusts before TDC, the hotter the head will become, because a lot of the energy released from the explosion will be transferred into the head. The later the mixture combusts, the cooler the head will run, because most of the energy from the explosion will be used to force the piston down, and hence turn the wheels.

This is a difficult topic to explain, let alone understand, so suffice it to say, even though the higher octane fuel combusts at a higher temperature, it does not "run" hotter. In higher compression engines, it will actually run cooler. As far as a "stock" warrior is concerned though, this is moot. The compression is so low, that the higher octane is just wasted.

I cannot speak for the different grades of fuel, as I have not worked for a major oil company, so I'll have to take ss97's word for that...
