Yes diesel engines have valves. Even the "Detriot" version which is like a cross between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke.

Your dad probably works on 2 stroke diesels. They dont have valves.

Not to be rude but if your dad has been a mechanic for 20 years he should know better. All the cummins engines have valves. The cummins is a traditional valve in head design. Go to the cummins web site thay have lots of pictures.

The 2-stroke detroit diesel has a cam operated exhaust valve that operates like a normal 4-stroke. That would be why ohhell said that they are kind of a cross between the two of them.

to tell you the truth he doesnt work on diesl engines only gas as far as I know. He has never torn apart a cummins or detriot motor. If he has worked on diesl then it was a smaller engine.Like a Polaris Diesl atv. he's not a heavy equipment mechanice. Anyway thanx for helping me understand. I never knew their was a 4 stroke and 2 stroke diesl. Thanx again Tbguy20
