What is a utility MX race?
#2
Yeah I have. My little brother and I both went to one. Instead of race quads your in a class of Utility, Sport/Ut group. So USUALLY everyone has 4X4 and racks to some extent. That way you arent racing your Bayou 220cc against a 400ex. I did this with my Wolverine once. I had a blast. Generally no one really hits the jumps that hard (there are always exceptions) with the heavy quads and its usually a smaller class than the sport bikes. I would recommend doing it its a good time! Just dont get in over your head when your out there! Have fun and Good Luck!

Just a helmet. No niether of us had a kill switch. Ummm I dont recall seeing a Recon there. There was a FourTrax 300 4X4 that did ok. My brother and I each had a Wolverine. There was a Suzuki King Quad? I think. Who took last. A Lakota. A couple Polaris one was a 325 whom was piloted by a dipstick who rolled 3 times on the turns(think you'd learn the first time). A couple other Wolverine's. Some other Yamaha's and that was about it. My brother and I got 3 and 4th. The guy who took 1st was on a Wolverine and WAY more experienced than ANY of us. I wouldnt worry about it your quad can do it. Just dont get in over your head! If you dont think you can do it slow down and get around it! Its just for fun! Especially if its your first time racing it! Let me know of anything else you want to know and let me know how you do! Later!

Just this past Saturday I raced my bone stock '00 Recon(Red) in a Utility class MX race.
It was a blast! My Recon was the smallest quad in the class, but I still managed a mid-pack finish.
8th overall out of 17 utility quads. Remember, mine is stock. Even the tires. The only thing I did was take off the front rack. I left the rear rack on to protect the rear of my quad a bit. I also left the bumper portion of the front rack on for protection.
The race I attended was sanctioned by the AMA & they required a helmet, goggles, over the ankles boots of some kind, and a long sleeve shirt.
The track was pretty tough for utility quads so don't ride faster than you or your quad are able to handle.
After watching a video of the race, I found two places that I had an obvious advantage over the bigger quads. 1) Cornering 2) The whoops section.
The small lighter weight of the Recon seemed to be an advantage there.
The jumps constantly bottomed the suspension, so try to keep it on the ground. I am a little big for my quad. About 6ft and 190 lbs.
I will definitely be looking for more power also. The bigger quads ran away from me on the flat, straight sections.
I am still a little sore today, but I am looking forward to doing it again.
Good Luck

Hey DedTru1. I'm not too far from you, Warrenton Mo., is there any good trails down your way? I'm considering going to Finger Lakes. Been there? I also go to Wild Woods occasionally. Maybe we'll meet sometime.

Hey Indianoutlaw,
I haven't had my Recon very long. I haven't been to Finger Lakes, but I've heard it is a pretty good place to ride. They also have a MX track there.
Where is Wild Wood at? I've never heard of it.
There are no public riding areas anywhere near my area (Hermann) that I am aware of.
Do you know of any up your way?

Hey jeepin,
Yeah I know where Festus is.
What kind of track do they have in Hawk Point? That is not more than 30 Minutes away from me.
I raced my Recon at the Washington Town & Country fair.
It was a temporary track in their outdoor arena.
Do they race a Utility class at Hawk Point?
How much does it cost to ride there for practice?
