Problem in water with 99 Magnum 500...
#1
I have a 1999 Polaris 500 Magnum 4x4. It seems that when you get in mud or water that covers the exhaust pipe(tip), the engine almost chokes or tries to die. My dad has a 1998 400 explorer and it has not happened to him or our friend on his 450es Honda. If anyone could help me solve this problem I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

If you keep it hammered while in the water it will keep the water blown out of the muffler until you suck it in the intake of the belt or carb.REmember this is a ATV not a jet ski.

Thats right, keep on it when you get in deep water. My wife and I crossed the Gila River and had water up on the front fenders but just kept on it all the way. I checked the quads for water on the other side and didn't have a drop in the belt housing or air box. It made me a believer in the quality of Polaris for sure. Normally we wouldn't get in a situation to have to go in water like that but being 2 wheel drive quads, we couldn't go back up the trail we had come down.

Yeah, I mean I am not trying to be stupid or anything like that. I just mean I was going down a trail where we ride and there was a hole that we had to go through to keep going. I went through, my dad went through and our friend went through. I was the only one who had any problem with it trying to drowned out like that the outher quads had no problem. I kinda hated to nail it straight through it because I didnt really know what to excpect the first time through. But anyways, thanks guys for making the newbie welcome........cough.....cough.....lol

You may want to try looking at your Jetting. When water covers the pipe your motor will richen up. If it is already running to rich it will bog out. You can try getting an after market pipe like the Aaen and install a K&N filter. This should lean it out enough that you don't have any more problems in water. If you don't want a louder pipe get a Dyno Jet Kit and rejet the carb.

Hairback357 - Thanks for the info. I was hoping that it would be some kind of answer like that. I know when I had my 250 trailboss it was never any problem. I have ordered a Dyno Jet Kit and a K&N filter. Maybe this will solve the problem.

That should do the trick for you. That is normally the cause for bogging in water over the pipe. If water is not getting into your air box or carb that is usually it. Does it seem to run rich now? I bet the guy who rides behind you can answer that. lol

Yeah I hope that it takes care of the problem. It does not seem to be running rich and I know that no water was entering my airbox or carb. The sparkplug looks good lite carbon but not wet to any degree. Since I have owned this quad I think that it should have a little more power than it does. If it is running rich then I think that could be the problem.
Has anyone installed a dynojet kit on there quad?
Is it a tough job?
I am not very familiar with carbs, I have a fear of getting them upset. I dont know anyone around here that is a good carb man on a quad.
Is there a lot of adjustment once the jets have been changed?
Thanks to everyone for there help
