22" tires, what gears?
#1
what works best with 22" tires, 15t or 16t?? I tried the 15t with 20" tires and it was geared a little too low for me. I have a set of 22" tires, should I keep the 16t or go back to the 15t? thanks

Without many mods I would say 15tooth is the way to go. I ride mainly dunes with 22 9paddle extreme's and a 15 tooth front sprocket, even considering going up to 42 in the rear. As the motor gains horsepower over the years, I don't think gearing down is as important. Some people with lots of power are actually gearing up. JMO

I'm asuming these are dirt tires not Paddles?
I am 200lbs.
I have my 22" Paddle tires (Sand Stars) set up with a 15t front 41t rear. On dirt the 41t may need to stay at 40t "stock". And even that may still be too low.
Good luck.

dirt tires, NOT paddles. I took it for a ride with the 22"s and 16t and I kinda like it, but when jumping the tires hit the heel guards when preloading and landing. I guess I'll have to cut them a bit. I guess putting the 15t on now would bring it back to stock gearing? it is geared kinda hign now, but I like it, I can ride out wheelies in 1st gear longer now where I used to rev out...

Hard dirt and sand are totally different riding conditions. There is hardly any drag on hard dirt but, sand is real bad drag.
I would think the 16 would be fine in the dirt (unless you are doing a lot of tight trails and a lot of technical hill climbs where the lower gear would be needed more.)
For the sand I think most run a 15/42 combo with the 22" haulers but, like I say. . Sand is Totally Different.

I ride 99% dirt with 22's and run a 15t front sprocket with stock rear and it works excellent. It works better on trails and tracks, but on fire roads it seems to take away from the top end just a tiny bit.

i got 22 bearclaws on my 2004 ds650 baja X i had a stock 16 tooth front sprocket on it it was geared insane it was so high i was hitting 82mph at 6900rpms with i had a shot of nitrous to get me to 7900 and i would of been doing 90mph atleast if not 95 LOL but yea it was geared way to high so i went to a 15 tooth front sprocket and now its still geared high but thats how i like it now when i do hit the rev limiter if i got a long strait stretch its 82.6mph on GPS
