Default 04 Polaris 90cc Predator Problem

Hello All
My son has a 04 Predator 90.
Here is the problem.
After he runs the quad for a while - 30-90 mins, He shuts it off, sometimes
it does not restart - Let it sit for 3-5 minutes and it restarts and runs great.
It happened at the cottage, I took off the sparkplug wire and plugged in a new plug, It was hard to see, but I think for the first several cranks, there was no spark. I tried it again, and spark was present - hooked it back up to the plug in the quad and it started and ran fine.
Could it be a problem with the CDI unit.
I know that temp. can do weird things to electronics
It does not stall on him, just a problem restaring after shutting off.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Default 04 Polaris 90cc Predator Problem

Same type of issues happened with our 03 pred and i had to replace the stator and spark plug wire end cap to completely solve the problems. i also used dielectrical grease on every plug, and wire contact on the bike. This same problem drove me crazy for about a month. hope this helps

Default 04 Polaris 90cc Predator Problem

Hello

I replace the coil on Thruday and went out on Sunday.
My son drove for about 2.5 hrs.
We shut it off various times and it restarted all the time.
So far, so good .
When I know for sure, I will let everyone know.
Keeping our fingers crossed.

Just wondering....

Was that its Spark Plug Coil or Stator Coil system?

If Stator system:
What part of the stator system did you replace? re: outer flywheel part or behind the flywheel part?
What is the part number?
Where did you purchase it?

If wondering, I think the stator has gone on our '03 Pred-90.

thanks.

I replace the ignition coil
It has the sparkplug wire attached to it
It is still under warranty
I got it from Todd's Equipment in Millbrook
Hopefully this will cure the problem
Take care
Rob

Spike,
i replaced the full stator system consisting of the plate, pigtail and electrical thats behind the flywheel. I had to get it from the local dealer and he said that several 03 models have had to replace this part. I also bought the 04 side cover and vent tube - it works alot better for keeping water/dirt out of the flywheel area. i was having alot of problems with dirt/water/mud getting up in the stator area everytime we went trail riding but don't have that problem anymore with the new cover. Keep an eye out on your spark plug cap - i have gone through 2 of the stock one but know i'm going to a 300ex (red) spark plug cap and it really keeps the plug top dry and holds on the plug very well if you are riding aggressive.

kyxplorer,

Thanks for your feedback.

To my surprise, the stator system on our '03 Pred-90 was ok. I got a call from my local Honda dealer today and he told me it was the ignition coil. Of all unexpected things to go wrong when it doesn't spark anymore!!! He replaced the ignition coil and applied electrical grease to every connector / plug he could see. Their Senior machanic told me that joints that are NOT "greased up" cause shorts / electrical spikes in the system. Hence, something eventually blows. This is true for any brand of quad you have. He told me to add mass amounts of electrical greasing (of every electrical joint I see) to my spring & fall end-end preparation activities. An expensive lesson learned I wanted to share with each of you....

I like your feedback about the '04 engine cover being better then the '03 engine cover. The next time I'm at my Polaris dealer (40 minute drive away), I'll inspect the '04 and possible '05 models on their showroom floor. When / if our stator does go, I'll consider purchasing a better cover. And yes, I will keep your excellent feedback in my archives. Will come in handy some day....

Thank you for that info. We were just talking about how crappy it is to have to constantly worry about going in to deep puddles. I will ask about the cover tomorrow when I pick up the coil. Our ignition coil is toast. We tested the stator and it is great so that was a relief. I was wondering if we could use another spark plug cap because the stocker really SUX...so TY for that heads up.

My other half is so pissed off w/the predator. He thinks it is a big let down that this thing can not handle water at all. So hopefully the 04 side cover will make a difference. Anyone else have any suggestions or a better fix please let me know.

He even said he would rather have a 4 stroke just for that reason. I am thinking about selling the Predator and looking into something that can handle water a little better. It seems to us that the Pred's electrical system is CRAP.

I still like the quad....compared to whats out there. I guess can't have it all. Only time will tell. If I have any more problems then it will be gone.
