Stage 2 requires new valve springs. Power is made in higher rpms with the stage two while the stage one is less aggressive and makes more midrange power.

i was just wondering what would be better for MX on a raptor.... stage 1 or stage 2. ive been going to cam my raptor for some time now...... but i didnt wanna get new springs if i didnt have to. i will be doing mostly MX and cross country. Ive also seem webcams for raptor, but they got that core exchange crap, so i think im goona go with hotcams.

I would just get the stage 1. You can go to the hotcams website and see the prices on them. The stage 2 is for midrange and top end and you don't really need top end on the track. Stage 1 is midrange and is a little cheaper because you don't have to buy the new springs. They are required with the stage 2 but some people on here will tell you that they know somebody that has installed a stage 2 without the springs, but I don't trust the stockers.

What else are you going to do? Just a cam will not make a big difference w/o porting. Opening the valves longer (which the cams will do) w/o more air and, fuel is kinda a waste of time! If your going to take the head of anyway get it ported!

Just a cam will make a nice difference in power. $350-400 for 3-4 horses through porting is not quite as cost effective unless you are going with at least a stage 2 cam. Porting is probably one of the last things you will need. The valves open longer allows more air in....this is the purpose of the bigger cam. I have not spoke with a builder that even recommends porting with only a stage 1 cam.
I ran a stage 1 cam and a 10.75/1 JE for a long time and the set-up had gobs of low end and mid range. I run a 10.75/1 JE now with a stage 2 and the set-up is much easier too ride hard for long rides without the monster low end torque. The stage 2 cam is gonna wear the valve train more with the stronger springs as well.
