You need to pull axle out of differential or take inside boot off first. Everything loads from inside, hub does not come off. Do a search for CV Joints I think I remember someone posting some pics off how job is done.

I just did the outer rear cv boot on our '03 400. The hub nut indeed comes off. I simply
jacked the ATV up, used a jack stand and took off the rear wheel. Removed the cotter
pin and used an air impact wrench (cheating) to take the nut off. Then I took the upper
and lower bolts off the control arms and moved the whole hub out of the way.
The axle stayed in place after I slipped the outer joint off (with a little help from
a hammer) since all I was replacing was the outer boot.
Fairly simply, but messy.

You should start from the inside and work your way out.
1. Jack it up, block it and remove tire.
2. Remove inner cv clamps and slide boot and down axle.
3. You should be able to see a metal ring (much like a snap ring). Pop this out to pull the cv joint apart. I think I removed the lower bolt on the spring to allow the a arms to come down far enough for the axle to pull out.
4. Repeat steps 1 & 2 on the outer cv joint. Then you should be able to completely remove the axle and slide the new outer cv boot on. Reverse the steps to put it back together.
I don't think you can just take the hammer to it without removing the wire snap ring on the inside first. I'm sure it you applied enough force eventually it would give, but you couldn't get it back together correctly. The cv boot kit from AC comes with all the necessary new parts and instructions. I can't find my bill right now or else I'd tell you how much it was.
Also make sure to get a universal cv boot pliers for putting the clamps on and off. It is well worth the $20 and can be purchased at any auto parts store. I think I got mine at NAPA.

O.K. I'm sure I will be able to get the nut off now that I know
it just needs a little more persuasion but now I'm confused
can I just change the outside boot or do I need to start
with the inside and do them both?
