Banshees do a pretty good job at mx i would reccomend buying a axle and shocks first. When you ride mx suspension is much more important than power... Have fun and start off slow

I know there will be a lot of people that don't want to hear this and will argue with me, but....

We have had trouble with the Banshee's and MX. They are always breaking something, from frames to swingarms to exhaust hangars. Seems like lots of little things all the time. The Banshee's chassis geometry does not work well for MX either, it'll be a handful.

Just my personal experience, others may vary....

I race MX and HS with my 99 Banshee, and the first thing I found out my suspension wasn't up to the task. Actually, Banshees don't come with front shocks. They look like shocks, but don't perform like them.

The rear shock isn't to bad, but should be revalved for MX. If your shocks can't cut it, the frame and swing arm will crack.

If your looking for excellent shocks at a reasonable price, you can't beat TCS. They made a world of difference for me.

Banshees are good mx racers, but make sure you get aftermarket shocks, a-arms, and axle. The suspension is just as important as the power. If you really enjoy quad racing, the Honda 250R is where its at.
250Rs RULE!!!

Never finished under 3rd place.

I use my banshee for mx racing. It takes a whole lot of $$$$ to get a shee to handle good on a mx track. Plus the d&mn thing wears you out. Until I had my motor done aand put LRD pipes on, the on/off power delivery would keep you busy. Now I can just lug it around the tight tracks in 3rd or 4th and just a small amount of clutch work. All the other guys comments about suspension is spot on. Banshee (especially the fronts) shocks are weak. I have seen guys snap them in half off table tops and get hurt pretty bad. The widely spaced front/bottom frame rails is where the poor handling comes from. Luckily there is a company that is now poppin out banshee frames with better geometry that allow you to use stock components. That is a good thing when you look at what converting to a Lone Star Outlaw or Laeger Pro-Trax 250r setup will set you back. The thing to keep in mind is, if you are just starting racing, modify as needed. I dont think you really have a good shot at becoming a GNC open pro-am champion. Change components as you tear them up. My shee is pretty well hopped up, and I have been beaten by near bone stock banshees. Some people have knack for things. Hopefully you are one of those people that can haul a$$ no matter what you are on. If you really want a bike to win on, go get a 250R. Good Luck! Be Safe

Who is making this frame you are referring to. The frame on my 98 has taken a beating and is getting replaced this weekend with a new factory frame. (got a pretty good deal or I wouldn't have wasted my time). I would really like to upgrade the chassis, but like you said, way too expensive to go the lonestar or laeger route.
