How do I tighten chain on 86 250r?

loosen both the allan head bolts on the back of the swing arm...then get a punch and a hammer and beat the carrier downwards..you will see notches in the carrier beside the sprocket where you can stick a punch...

Please don't use a hammer/punch!!!! You will un-necessarily beat up your adjuster.
Those notches are for using a spanner wrench. Get one, they're cheap.
Make sure you leave enough slack and don't take it all out. Need at least 1/2-5/8".
