700 clunking noise upon accel&decel+ bad fuel pump
#1
well I have about 5 miles on the sportsman 700 EFI... and the fuel pump is bad...Even at the dealer test ride...It acted a little funny...today it died and I cycled the key and the fuel pump wasnt running...smacked the bottom of the tank a few times and coaxed it into working to get me home..The secondary clutch on these things are really noisy....I dont care for that too much...I took mine apart and found a half inch of free play between the clutch and the driven shaft going into the transmission. This is a new clutch design compared to the older models..Looks like a good clutch but something needs to be done to get rid of that free play...The sound reminds me of exactly what the old clutches sounded like when the spring and helix were installed incorrectly...thats what got me into ripping into this one...I am assuming that every 700 has this noise????anyone else??? This is the first problems I have ever had with a polaris. I should really own my own dealership. I know so much more of whats going on than they do. Im sure im gonna have to convince joe the pothead mechanic that the fuel pump is bad...since its an intermittent problem...Time will tell...I'll keep everyone posted..

your not alone. I just bought two of the EFI's last monday, my wifes is good so far other than the drivetrain noise. mine on the other hand stalled the once the first day, three times the second day, and completely died on me in the middle of the woods on the third day of ownership with only 11 miles on it. I had a feeling it was the fuel pump because I read alot of the reviews on this site as well as many others that alot of people have had problems with them. sure enuff I talked to the dealer and they found the fuel pump bad. well duh I told them that when I dropped it off to them. they had to order the whole gas tank to repair it. the other problem I have had with it is the fit of the plastic gas tank cover to the fender area in front of the seat, it fits like shiatt! and yes mine also has the driveline noise which is very annoying cause for the cost of the machines you would think polaris would have done something to correct this. I wonder if the 05's will be this way. other than those problems I like the quads, I should have mine back today since they told me yesterday but never called. I have been riding my wife's after work almost everyday for a little while around the house to see if the fuel pump is going to hold up. I never thought to hit the gas tank to see if the fuel pump would work long enuff to get me home when mine died but I'll remember next time if there is one. have you put any extras on your EFI?

I read on a post of someone that rode the 800 efi at the polaris party, and he
thought the driveline noise was really bad, so evidently polaris did not fix it for
the 05's. You know, if this was a chevy ford or dodge truck, people would just
not tolerate this kind of slop, I know of no other atv where people complain about
driveline noise. Maybe it is time to look at the king quad. I do not know if I would
feel comfortable taking a polaris 50 miles in the backwoods by myself. I think if
polaris wants to be a player, they better start looking at quality control. It's to
bad to because I really have liked polaris, but I need to have something where
I do not have to bang on the gas tank to get home.

I hear ya there buddy. well the dealer dropped my EFI off at my house for me today. took it for a 7 mile run through the back woods behind the house. It's very muddy back there through the trails due to all the rain we just had here in michigan. I also took it over to the next door neighbors house to ride on his oval dirt track which has deep, muddy burms at two of the four corners. I got my EFI really muddy, the way a real ATV'r should. It bothers me when guys buy nice quads but don't want to get them dirty ya know. the only problem I have with the EFI now is that before it died I had just filled the tank up to full, I got it back with like 1/4 tank. I know they would have had to drain most of the gas into the new tank but damn even I never spill that much gas to go from full to quarter tank. I'll have to call out there tomarrow.

all i ever hear about those sportsman EFI's is that they dont work right or somethin is wrong with em. can polaris ever make a machine right? i dont think they know what they are doin over there.

Hey BareTread I have two 2002s that haven't had a Single problem other then the 500ho handlebar clamp bolts needed tightened down. So I can say they know how to make a machine right.

lol BareTread....if polaris didnt know what they are doin...then why are they #2 on the sales, and slowly catching up to honda? Ive owned the first year 500HO, only problems i had with it, were my tires wearing out and i had to buy new ones...how many 700EFI sales has there been? and there has only been some ppls on this forums complain...also, polaris seems to stand behind there products, unlike other companies out there. No manufacturer is perfect, every model out there from each manu will have a few lemons mixed in them, like mentioned earlier in this post of mine, at least polaris stands behind there products.

Never been stranded on my Polaris' and I've been on many 30 mile plus trips into the woods. The '02 700 does have the driveline clunk but has been very reliable.
