Need help on Raptor Upgrades
#1
I've got an 03 Raptor. My real objective is to make it a great ice tracker. For those of you who are strangers to the winter sports, think flattrack on ice with screws in your tires.
My current setup looks like this:
+2+1 ASR A-arms and billet spindles
DB X-33 +5 rear axle
Burgard stem/anti vibe and fmf bars
Wiseco 11:1 stk bore piston
HC stg 1 cam
CT full pipe
K&N no lid w/ outerwear
Extra short shocks borrowed from another machine and only used for the ice
I've also got a clutch upgrade in the works
There are other things, but this is all that really matters for handling and performance. I have a few things to buy like a new sway bar and other littler trinkets before the race season begins. The summer is when I get the bulk of my extra income, so if I dont upgrade now, I know I wont have the money later. What I'd like is a few suggestions on improvements I can make. I'm not ready to bore and go to a bigger piston, and its my understanding that the stage 1 cam is the best setup for my kind of power needs, which is a lot of midrange.
Short of a full out 686 kit, is there anything else I can do to improve my performance? I have considered an edelbrock carb, but have heard a lot of mixed reviews and theories about switching to a single. I'd look at a set of FCR's, but they are a lot more cash than the edelbrock and I'm not sure that my machine really would benefit with the very mild build it currently has. I have also considered a cdi unit. I just cant see raising my rev limiter as helpful for my kind of racing. I'm open to any input and suggestions and really appreciate the help. Thanks.

JMO but I think you would benfit mostly from a stage 2 cam and a good port and polish. Again this is just my opinion, but I think the stage 2 is great on mid range. I can only speak for my set-up, but I can be lugging mine prety good in 3rd or 4th and wick the throttle open and it pulls...hard. This is also with my high gearring, 15/40. I have NEVER thought I didn't have enough low end or mid range with this cam, and I'm speaking of when I was not just dragging.
The single carb is a debate all its own, especially if you throw the word Edlebrock in to it. lol I like my Lectron set-up. I gained power from it everywhere. Weather it was from improperly tuned carb, because its a single, or because of the way the carb works I can not say. It was also way cheaper than a set of FCRs, less than half as much if you include a intake for the FCRs.
Since the ice is smooth, at least not mx track rough, have you given any thought to a set of modde stock carbs?
And for sure get a dual filter kit. For the price of it you'll gain alot per dollar.

One filter on each intake. Sixsixt sells a sweet setup.
I have changed the gearing, a lot. I usually run 14/41 on the big tracks and 13/41 on the smaller ones. Right now I have a +2 swing arm I'm trying to dial in, but its not good to use on the ice.
Thanks for the input ward. I have heard of a few lectron raptors, but I havent actually gotten any info on the outcomes. I rarely see them for sale online, and never on ebay or in any shops or dealers. What does a lectron and intake run and from where? I assume something in the low to mid 40's on the size.
I have been looking for a place to possibly send the head for porting. I remember the good old day when you could get your 250R done for 150 bucks. Most of the places want 400 plus for the raptor head. I know its more work, but its an adjustment for me. Everything seems to cost more for fourstrokes. I have been struggling with the cam idea, but I think I'll go for it now. Any difference b/w the kibblewhites, hot cam, or the rest of the brands of springs?
Sorry for all the questions, but the help is greatly appreciated.

I would put a 12.5 piston and a stage 2 cam in. No need to get the cdi IMO

Just to clarify, if you don't know, the Lectron is not a 100% bolt on and go. Do a search with my user name and Lectron carb. I had a post about a couple of mods that have to be done to make it fit. When I did mine I couldn't find a 2/1 manifold, so I made one. SixsixT must have used some of his persuasive talking and got one from Edlebrock.
The carbs are cheap, no need to look on ebay. When you buy a new one it comes set-up for you. With the money you could save one ebay getting one, it would could cost you that much to get it right for your bike. I got mine from Joe at Precission Porting. If I did it again I would probably go with Packard or Mr.HP, I just had a few small problems with my order. And with buying it new you will get the right size. That was a big question for me; what size to get, because I didn't know. On gas, with your mods you'll probably be best with a 46...but thats just my guess. One of the three dealers I listed will be able to tell you for sure.
Depending on the intake cost you can have it ready (carb, filter, cable, intake, outwears) for about 500 total. A set of FCRs are at least 800 and a nice manifold will set you back at least 200 more.
Hot Cams and White Bros springs are KibbleWhites, I don't know about the others sold. The ONLY reason I would ever recomend a stage one to anybody for anything is if they wanted a cam and couldn't afford to buy the springs too. JMO though.
As far as head porting goes, its going to be expensive for good work, no way around that. And in my opinion Craycraft is the best out there for many reasons....which I am sure you've heard enough times to know.lol
Have you tried the stock swingarm? Seems like the shorter arm might be better, but since I live in south Miss I know NADDA about ice...unless its in a drink or snow cone.lol

The reason I stuck with the 11:1 was because of the rod issue. I didnt have the extra 250 to shell out for the carillo, so I stayed low. If I dont need the rod to up the comp, then its definately an option. Otherwise I'll wait and do both at the same time. I'll probably be due for a little boring after this race season. Thanks for the cdi help too.
I use the stock swingarm on the ice, the +2 is just for summer sand drags. Stock length is typically the best for ice and usually stock or -1 for flattrack.
I gathered that the lectron wasnt a bolt on. I have a shop that fabs parts for me now and then so that wouldnt be an issue. Sounds like it might be something to wait until next summer on though so I would have more time to experiment and tune.

The tuning part is one of the benfits of the Lectron, its quick and easy. 15minutes tops, with all the plastic on it and you have changed the air fuel ratio. But I do understand your point.
