Strange noise from 04 400fis...
#1
Hello, just purchased a new 04 400 and have a question i'm hoping someone can answer. Only have a few hours on it so far, but occasionally there is a noise which appears to be coming from the left side in the back. difficult to pinpoint where. it is hard to describe it, but it kind of sounds like a screeching sound or a grinding sound. have no idea what this could be.
seems to happen after running for a bit at some speed, not necessarily wide open throttle, but it does not happen just putting around. any thoughts??

I think I know what you are talking about, mine makes that too sometimes. I hear it more around 10mph or so. I think it might have to do with the exhaust or something around there. I don't really worry about it, as I have 250 miles and no problems.
ANyone else have this noise?

When I purchased my 400 new it had a rattle at idle and up to about 1/4 throttle onthe left side towards the rear. (not a screatching sound) But, like Catterman said its the exhaust pipe rubbing against the frame.
You should be able to do a search on this site for the postings about this that were up but it was quite a while ago. The way I fixed mine was to remove the seat and side plastic panels. You should be able to see where the exhaust is touching the frame along the side (probably right under the seat in front of the rear tire).Use a short piece of 2x4 or 2x2 and a hammer. (real technical work) Bend the exhaust enough to not touch the frame.
Some guys where able to put washers for spacers in on exhaust pipe mounts as well. NEver tried this as the 2x4 thing worked great and was about a 30 minute fix.
Not positive if this is your noise by the way you described it but it doesn't cost you to look. If the thing is still under warranty I would look to see if it was rubbing and take it to the dealer and have them do the work if its not too much trouble.

Hey thanks for the reply, I wondered about the exhaust myself since the noise kind of comes in and out when running 10-15mph. I'm not sure if thats it or why that would happen. I'd love to eliminate it if anyone has a suggestion. Any ideas as to best determine if this is coming from the exhaust??
thanks in advance... a little nervous about it since it's brand new!
