Default thermostat/fan question

i searched, and it looks like the fan comes on at 215-220. what temp does it shut off at?
what is "normal" operating temp for the ds? (i realize terrain and outside temp play a big part in that)
im getting my gauge soon, but if the fan dosnt come on till 220, and mine is on quite a bit (and even after i kill it, it stays running for probably 3-4 minutes before it shuts off)

what is the "danger" zone? (light comes on at 239, and that hasnt happened, but im also dealing with a red dummy light problem, so wont have that to rely on till i figure out the problem)

Default thermostat/fan question

Roost the fan comes on at 203, shuts off once cooled down to 194.
The shop manual concersion from celsius to farenheit is wrong - shop manual says 95C(221F) but 95C converts to 203F actually. There are several conversions wrong in the manual, including measurements from metric to inch also.
Also, my temp gauge confirms my fan comes on at 203.

your bike seems to be behaving like everybody elses based on your description, like it should.
since you got a gauge on the way, hopefully it will ease your mind once you see the true temp.

Default thermostat/fan question

alright thats good to know. I havnt decided if i want the ESR, or a remote gauge (dash area mount) but either way i should have one or the other in the next couple of weeks.
i was especially worried with my light being dead, that i was running at like 230+ for the hour + long 1st/2nd gear woods riding.

once i get this installed and probably find its just fine, i can clear up the starter noise, and HOPEFULLY i should have a good starting/running/reliable ds! (havnt been able to describe it like that since new....lol)

I may end up doing the switch deal, so i can switch it on prior to drags/woods riding and not once it gets to 204.

Thanks guys

Default thermostat/fan question

for some reason lots of people worry when their fan comes on, but I don't understand why. the rotax engineers have made engines for 80 years now, and the DS is the first QUAD to ever come from the factory with a Nicasil cylinder instead of a steel or cast sleeve. Rotax says the fan doesn't need to be on until 203, so I believe them. A bike with a steel sleeve, like a Raptor for example, may not run its fan as often, but its also not wicking as much heat from the cylinder as a Nicasil coated aluminum cylinder does. Coolant temps may be higher on bikes with Nicasil cylinders, but that doesn't mean the combustion temp is....that's the beauty of it all....that's its purpose.
just don't forget to flip your switch on if you go that route. and don't have the switch on when it doesn't need to be, like middle of winter.

with the switch it isn't doing away with the sensor its more of a override it just presents the idea of 203

Default thermostat/fan question

ya, i was just worried that for how long my fan was running, and w/o my red light, that i could be running dangerously hot, but if it shuts off at 194 or so, then i think im probably ok.

does anyone know what temp it takes to overheat the DS? i know a few people have overheated due to jetting, and wondering how hot you really have to get that thing for it to overheat.
