Non atv ? about 50 dirt bikes

I think I'd teach them to crawl before they can fly. I started mine on a Yamaha PW50, shaft drive, 2-stroke, oil injected. light, easy to handle, almost zero maintenace for you with the shaft drive. governor for speed, and top speed around 30MPH. no gears. very reliable and great re-sale. lots of used stuff around. with the PW50 basic owner's manual, it was simple to work on.
I thot the Honda 50 was too big and heavy and intimidating. the Suzuki is chain drive and I wasn't crazy about it.
our next bike was a honda XR 70. 4-stroke, great bike. 3 speed, semi-auto (no clutch).now we have a honda xr80, but he's still learning to clutch and not quite ready.
motocross seems to be ruled by the KTM50, with the odd Kawasaki 60. these are both very powerful and not for 1st ride learner IMHO.

Even though I am a zuki freak I'd go with and I hate myself for recomending this brand but the little crf 50/xr50 . It is a 4stroke and very reliable plus Adults (If you can call them that) seem to be modifing these things and race'n em theirselves. So that is a big benny for Jr. because the market is flooded W/hop up parts that greatly improve performance when the are ready.

Ktm is cool , I guess I assumed we were talking about a beginner if the child is not and he or she is going to race then I would agree.
And i checked out your link to KTM and wow I wish they would get into the mini atv buisness. Looks like they really build a quality machine that must be proven to work because they dominate the race scene

Thanks for the input. That KTM is pretty cool. I will prob shy away from the Honda since it is a 3 speed and I want him to start out on an auto so he can just worry about riding. We will prob go for the KTM mini adventure or the PW50. Quadduck, I believe there are older mini ktm quads out there and also I think the lems have ktm engines in them.

How old is your child? I'm sorry but Ktm doesn't rule the mx series. I don't want to make waves. But this is just my thinking. The King Cobra and the Polini's are better built bikes then the KTM. My son who is 6 rides a Polini x3 works. This bike flat out flys. He has been clocked at 50 mph. This bike is built like a tank. But they are very Pricy. There $3500 new. They do make smaller types. They seem to have alot of clutch problems with the Ktm bikes.I'm not bashing Ktm I do like them. The mini adventure is a nice bike but the clutch is a nightmare. You will have hours and hours into testing and working on the clutch. They recomend that you only run the bike 20 minutes at a time then let it cool down. You have to tear the clutch apart after every race and change the oil and change the washers about every 3 hours of racing.

My son is 6 but he has never even riden a two wheeler. I def want to take it slow and it seems that the pw50 is prob one of the most reliable bikes on the market so at this point I am leaning towards the pw50. A guy at my work has a 2001 with low hours that I can get for like $400.
