Hey whats up guys im new to the forums and the ds world, After a 8 year dry spell from quads i bought my new ds and i dont think i could have picked a better machineHeres my Q tho. I will be riding in the woods a lot more than i will at the dunes and altho a big bore is within budget i am more interested in a 50-55 hp setup that will be linear and very reliable. Linear and reliable being the very key words in that sentence another thing would be torque. So heres the deal im looking at the ronwood st 2 with his #8 cams and the 12.5 piston. Insert opinion here. Also im really not liking the idea of not having a rev limiter on the bike So im looking at the vortex cdi instead, even tho i can listen to the motor and know when its close id really rather have the piece of mind of the limiter, plus the vortex allows for diff curve setups. to me this could be a blessing for the dual terrain rider such as myself or a nightmare. The blessing being that i could select a more torque oriented curve for the woods and a higher rpm for the dunes or the nightmare being more things to mess with and throw the tune of the bike completely off. Ideas?Once again id really love to just go all out and build the sand screamer of my dreams but this machine will serve double duty so keep that in mind. Also I just moved to the sacramento, ca area so if anyone lives around here with a ds it would be nice to be able to talk to someone local about tuning setups. One more thing too....just how much of a pain is it going to be to get the bike tuned? I can do the tuning np as far as jetting and such but from what im reading on the forums it almost sounds like they become a real pain in the **** or am i mistaken? Thanks see you guys at ds days

if i were you i wouldnt buy the cams. i would stay with the stk ones a buy a piston 12.5-1, vortex cdi, pipe or end cap, and a carb. and port and polish the head and intake. then mess with your gearing. you will love that bottom end torque. and for a little more go put it on alky!! i know its a hassle but its not that bad. good luck ps i had a stage 2 if you dont whant to spend the money on a stage 3 then go with what i put down. the cams are a little to much untill you go to a stage 3.

I'm putting in a 11:1 piston with HR intake/exhaust trail cams. Supposed to gain all around power and work great on pump gas (91 octane). Cams are supposed to pull hard to 7,000 rpm, which is a tad better than the current 6,300rpm. This, combined with the Vortex, Lectron, ported intake and end-cap I'm hoping to be around 55ish HP.
I won't be able to really test the gains until it cools off at Dumont. A friend has the same mods without the cam/piston combo, so it will be a good test of performance. Last year, we swapped wins at Comp hill. This year?

I would do cams too. There are several cams that will boost overall power, the staggered cams (109/110 WEB) (a1/a2) and I'm sure HP has some that will give big gains everywhere.
I have a stock bore 12.5:1 with the 109 Web cams, still got plenty at lower rpms and have a lot more from 6000 to 7500 rpms.
With 12.5:1 need to run at least 102 octane IMO.
Reliability has never been a problem for me.

The Bomb with a vortex, ported intake, Lectron and end cap dynos in the low 50's. Thats a torque montser and respectfully fast low 50's. Add some compression, 91 octane and mild cams and you got your trail worthy setup in the mid 50s.
12.5 compression and $4-5 per gallon fuel doesn't seem like a trail combo to me, that's why I backed down to 11:1 -- but I ride in the out back, so 100-110 octane isn't readily available and on last week we burned over 100 gallons of fuel in 6 days.
The HR parts come "tuned for your elevation" and are bolt on. Sounds like you want the woods kit. Folks say its nice as well.
enjoy

Sounds about right to me....im gonna give the shop the ok in the morning ...I'm thinking ill go with the msd ignition more than likely for the hot coil and 8.5 wires plus i think it would be cool to see a shiny red msd box
