'05 Kodiak 450 or Grizzly
#1
I am very interested in buying either a Kodiak 450 or a Griz 660, both '05. I have 4+ rough, up & down acres on which I will use it for clearing brush, trees, etc and plowing. Here is the rub. I have a driveway that is approx 800' long and 400' of it is very steep. The incline is probably 30 degrees +. Will either have the power, low gear etc. to get this job done or should I forget the driveway altogether.

Either one will do fine, they both have a low / high range transmission. I plow a farm lane that’s 6/10 of a mile long with an ’02 Grizzly. Just one pass out and one pass back gets the job done. It doesn’t strain the machine at all so I’m sure the 450 would not have a problem either (you just may be going a tad slower when compared to the Grizzly). Only mistake I made was getting too small of a plow (I got the standard 48” plow from Yamaha). With my plow angled, the Grizzly’s tires (ITP C-Series rims make it wider) stick out past the width of the blade.
I’d say steepness is not an issue. I would think you could plow any driveway that a car is capable of going up when there is no snow. I bought chains for my tires for use when plowing, but so far there’s never been a need to use them. Even the stock tires worked fine with the machine in 4WD. Now I use 27” 589’s which have very aggressive tread and they provide even more bite in the snow.
So which one should you get? It depends which one feels the best to you and what else you plan to do with it. If going fast is not important to you then you probably don’t need the extra power of the Grizzly...

Thanks. I am getting mixed answers on the plowing but like you most people say either machine will work and work well. I think I want the Grizz more because for only a $1000 more you get alot more machine. My dealer also pointed out that the wider plow is in order for just the reason you point out. Once you turn the plow you expose your wheels and your running on snow or outside the track of the plow anyway.

I run a 60" plow and have no problem pushing a full pass of snow with it. It surprised me how much it will push. If you start to loose traction on that steep grade try adding weight to the wheeler or always push it down hill. LOL

Thanks Shane. Downhill push is a must. The extra weight is also a good tip. When I was a kid we had a John Deere lawn tractor that wouldn't move snow without some heavy weight on the tail. Since you have a Griz how do you like it?

I am very happy with my Grizzly. It performs like I expected it to and the ride is comfortable too. I was very surprised at how much snow that I could push with a 60" plow. It goes fast enough for a big machine on the trails and does a good job in the mud with the 26" mud lites on it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.
