I have a 2004, Polaris 700 EFI. The bike has been through all kinds of terrain without any problems until recently. Another rider in our group had both lower cv boots fail (2004 700 EFI). They were replaced by our Polaris dealer only to have it happen the next week. We looked at mine to see what the difference was and mine were both leaking also. I have 300 miles and just under 50 hours on my bike. After disassembling mine, it is obvious what the issue is. The boot and clamp are nested back in the outer hub casting. The hub casting is stationary and the axle rotates inside this casting. Any type of foriegn matter; i,e, rocks, sand, sticks; can get in this are and become wedged between the cv boot and the housing. Our experience is with small rocks punching pin holes into the boot allowing grease to be thrown out. If you see any grease comimg out then you have a breached cv boot. We have contacted an Engineer at Polaris and sent him our old boots. In the mean time, I modified my outer castings by milling a 3/4 x 2 inch slot in the bottom of the casting, between the lower A-arm mounts, to allow the small rocks and mud a place to escape. I took picure but don't have them back yet. I also installed the best boots from Gorilla.

I believe this is a real problem because there are 4 of us with 700's (3 EFI's and one standard) and all have lost their rear outer cv boots. The 700 standard has only 130 miles on it; the others less than 300 miles. I will try to keep the group posted on any news from Polaris.

 

I'm looking for a new boot, and heard the gorilla to be the best, where do you buy this? online?? And what did you pay?

Ive had the same problem as you, ive had 4 boots ripped in one year on 2 quads. We finially looked into the guards you work saying, we also just made our own, and we havent had any boots rip since then, so i think they do the trick

 

im having problems with my inner boots on the front. ive already had three to tear with only 150 miles on it. i called gorilla axles and their not making them for the 05 models yet, the axles on my 05 are bigger so when they make them ill will get them. makes me feel better that im not the only one having these problems. i thought it was something i was doing. the polaris boots are way to soft and way to thin.

 

I put the Gorilla boot on.... seems like it'll last. Only thing I dont like is the crappy clamps that came with it.... I couldn't get em tight enough, so I had to put a hose clamp on the one end.

 

does the hose clamp work out ok for you

 

I have 4 hundred miles on mine and same thing....my boots are almost gone...the second to the oustide rib is worn very thin...and I dont go through much mud or water...All polaris has to do is indent the frame down and lower the rear gearbox down about inch...that would lessen that severe driveshaft angle that is eating up the boots and taking away power.

 

Is this a 700 only issue?? I've never tore a CV boot and i drive in alot of mud/rocks ... i have around 300 miles on my new 2004.5 500HO and 1100 miles on my totaled 2004.5 500HO.

 

i dont know. the boots on mine are very thin. i think polaris should put a better made boot on their atvs. the reason they dont is because there making more money on the sell of replacement boots than they are their atvs. i put aluminum boot gaurds on mine and still ripped another boot while riding in a creek. im not going to replace it with another sorry polaris boot im going to wait until gorrila axles makes one for mine in a month or two.
