Default 85 250 big red

We recently dug the old ATC out and brought it back to life by swapping over all the good parts from 2 250 big reds and making one good bike and one, well another heap of parts. Any way, when going down hill just coasting, it will slip out of gear until you tp the throttle, then it catches and will hold back again. That is the biggest issue with this bike. The only other thing is that their is an occasional rattle from the engine, almost like a timing chain.

Any suggestions on what may be causing this?

wel the downhill thng s because of the automatc clutch. its activated when you hit the throtle. You ca tighten the timing chain by the adjuster on the front right side of the engine. I think the adjuster automaticly tightens though. mine rattles on the low end also. I have a honda cb750 bike motar with 44,000 miles on it. it rattles at the low end but still screams at 10000 rpm.

[when going down hill just coasting, it will slip out of gear until you tp the throttle, then it catches and will hold back again.

This is caused by the one way clutch sprag located behind the centrifical clutch behind the right side case cover. I am willing to bet that the kickstart slips and the engine sounds like it is spinning after being shut down then stopping with a clunk. This is a common problem with the 250 Reds. I have changed quite a few of them. Sit down when you go to price a new one.

Yea thats a common problem. But I never had a down hill problem with mine. The kickstart gear actualy kicked off of the pin it sits on. It wedged in the case and bound the motor up. Easy fix but I dont know why it kicked off its pin. I took it apart and put it all back together with the kick start gear on its pin and never had another problem.
