Honda atc 185s
#1
I got a '83 Honda 185s that will idle very high all the time. I played with screw on carb, don't think it did anything. It will start on first pull with choke up and run, but the engine gets very hot and it feels like the throttle is always being pushed when you don't even give it gas for it to rev. very high.
Any thoughts?

Hmm... Im thinking a couple things....
1) Your throttle cable could be sticking or something. I suggest that you take it off and see if it plays freely.
2) Your Jet needle could be set to high, which would make the bike run at high rpms at a lower elevation. I know this because mine did it to when i tinkered around with it.
What you want to do is take the seat and gas tank off. Then you will see your throttle cable going into the top of your carb, that top piece can be screwed off just like a regular nut. MIght need some pliers or something to take it off.
Once you get that off, you can pull it out and you have a piston looking thing with a thin rod coming out the bottom of it. Thats you needle jet. Im not to sure hwo to get that needle jet off, havent done it in awhile.
But, what you want to do it compress the spring between the lid and the piston thing. So, maybe push the throttle wide open and this will compress it. Hold the spring in place to keep it compressed, and now pull the throttle level back to its orginal state. This should push the end cable out of the piston thing and will alllow you to remove it.
The needle jet can be taken out by jus simply pushing on it downwards. It will only come out of that spring on the top is off tho. Be careful when you take the needle out, that u dont loose the little retainer clip.
Now, the needle should have 5 notches on it. The little "E" clip should be in the 3rd position (or the middle.)
3) Make sure when you turn ur choke off it isnt sticking, theres a little butterfly valve at the back of the carb you can feel for.
4) When the bike is running, spray some starter fluid into the carb, check all around the intake manifold for any fluids coming out. If there is, you have a bad gasket and this is causing a vacumm which will make it idol high.
5) And for safe measure, try cleaning out all orifaces in the carb with carb cleaner or equivilent and dry it with compressed air.

It could also be an air leak between carb and motor. Grab some carb cleaner start up the atc and spray carb cleaner around the connections of the carb. If the idle drops you have an air leak. If you use the little tube on the spray nozzle you should be able to pinpoint the leak easier.
