01 Rubicon Steering hard & Squeaky
#1
I have an 01 Rubicon with 1000 miles.
The steering is very hard and squeaks like there is a dry rubber boot somewhere.
Anybody else have this problem or is there a cure?
Thanks

I just fixed a simular problem on my 02 rancher. My guess is since Hondas share a lot of parts and design yours will be about the same. Up top there is a U shaped clamp that supports the top sterring knuckle. You might have to remove some plastic to get to the bolts. The plastic knuckle rides around the steering shaft, then on the plastic knuckle there is a grove, a hard plastic/rubber thingy goes there....the U clamp holds this all together and in place, I'm not sure of the design(or why it's designed that way) but that's what I have. Mine was hard to steer, squeaking, etc. I took it all apart, cleaned, lubed and there was no change, squeak was gone, still tight. I noticed if I loosened the bolts a bit the steering was free. I'm sure the system was designed to be a snug but free fit, not in my case. I ended up placing a washer between the U strap on one side. I was able to tighten up the bolts all the way but leave a little wiggle room.
This fix along with a Warn 424 makes it easy to steer and control.
Good Luck,
Rob
