What tire should I put studds in for my Z400 ?
#1
Hi
The winter are coming up, and I want to make me a set of studded tires for my Z 400. My uncle have rallying studds and a studding gun, but I need some tip about a good tire to place studds into. ( I should like to studd the stock tires, but I dont think thew will be any good ). Some of my buddies have studded Dunlop 707 I think it was, they were OK, but I think a little expensive.
Any good suggestion of a type of tires that are great to place studds into ?
Thanks
Tor Erik

If I were you I would just get a set of chains, Chains will go farther than studded tires, but 4 wheel drive will go all the way. My buddy ran all winter on his honda 300 ex with chains, he did not go everywhere he wanted but he went farther than I thought he would.

Basically you want a tire with solid, rather than "skelletonized" lugs ( lugs with hole or voids in them ), & tires with a harder rubber compound... here is a bit of my response to the question concerning studding up utility quad tires... "even before I finished reading your post, I was ready to warn you, that most races, state that you must use AMA aproved studs ( I had ice raced my Jeep before, & didn't know about the AMA aproval being needed, until after I did the tires up )... there are a few open class races that I'm allowed to use my "custom" tires... the carbide tipped studs will outlast regular hardened studs by 3 or 4 to 1, but cost more... I studded up a set of 22" TSL's for mine, specifically for racing... most sport quad Ice racers are using the ( non dimpled ) knobbies, with Chene Shin C-826's or similar being a favorite... but these are not available in a 25" O.D. tire... there are 25" solid knobbies available, but they are for a 9" or 10" rim, which are available & work nicely on the back of the Prairies... I'm studding up another set ( with AMA approved studs ), for snow plowing use, & Ice racing... & will use what I already have for tires... I'm going to stud up a set of the rear Dunlops, off of my '02 650 Prairie, for the fronts, & a set of 25" X 11" X 10" Dunlops ( stock rear wheels & tires off of our 300 Prairie )"

on a fast sport quad i do not recomend chains. chains have a tendance to fly off tires at high speeds. a good tire to stud is the 6 ply maxxis razors. they are a solid tire and there tread design works well in the snow

"the only difference between 4 wheel drive, and 2 wheel drive is the distance from the road that you get stuck" -someone who's gotten stuck in a 4 wheel drive
if your riding ice, then go with studs, if your riding powder, and virtually no hard pack, get the paddle master tires. they're super strong and won't break in the snow, and they'll give u awesome traction.

Thanks for your reply moldycheese !
You are mentioning Maxxis Razors, do you think of Razr and Razr2 ( I have been looking at maxxis.com ) I tought maybe this tires was a little soft ? I tought of a little harder tire, mabye look like the maxxis bighorn ? I tought they would manage the studds better ? maybe I am wrong.
Any suggstion of where to buy Maxxis tires, that could ship outside the US ?
Thanks !

you can go with either. i like the razrs because there square profile lets them float better. also get either the 4 or 6 plys. these have a hard enough compound that you dont have to wory about the studs flexing when you let it go on the ice.

If you want the best, buy the cheng shin. They are actually cheaper than the mx tires you have listed too. I have a set I have been trying to get rid of, brand new with mint condition studs in them. But they are on yamaha bolt pattern wheels, 4/115 I think. Go with the cheng shin, unless you can find some of the old dunlops off a quadzilla. The tire model has been out of production for a few years.
