AZ riders with the tm45 ported intake hook up
#1
I have gone through all the previous tm 45 threads and have even PMed Hightower (thanks for your help)But I am at a loss.At first I could get it started and it ran alright but bogged down after half throttle.(this is when I was in Illinois this summer)Once I got back in AZ.It just back fires and would kill it self when you gave it gas.I put it back to factory settings and now It won't even start.I checked the plugs and they were black .(WHich were new in Illinois)I know that means it is running rich.I cleaned those off and now I can't even get it to spark. If any of you guys would be willing to give me hand I will come out and meet you where ever you live preferably the eastside.I work at Honeywell and ther is a big group of us going to Glamis on the 22nd of Oct.so I want to get this beast running by then.I am going out of town this weekend but the 9th and the 16th weekends of Oct. I am available I am willing to pay I am just tired of pulling my hairout and a couple of the bike shops I talked to won'y even touch it since it has been modded youcan pm me or answer the thread.I live in chandler

Sounds like you have a few problems. The first thing I would do is get new spark plugs and see if you have spark in both plugs. If not go to your coils and make sure you have 12 volts to each coil and the coil is sending voltage to your plugs it could be as simple as a bad coil or coil wire If you don't you could have a magneto problem or an electrical break in your ignition system Also if only one of your coils is working your bike will run but it will crap out on you and sputter after about half throttle. After you figure that problem out I think you will have a easy time just jetting your new carb.
Hope this could be of some help to you.

I will help you out if you want. Do check your spark first. If you still need help with that Carb let me know. Hightower has helped me out and I feel comfortable with that Carb now. I have plenty of jets and an extra 97 needle. You don't have to pay me and I keep beer in the garage fridge. Weekends are tuff though except this weekend I will be working on and riding the toys. During the week is OK by me but I do live close to Anthem. PM me if you want some help.

Im not from AZ but might be able to help. I would recomend doing what Tpsycho said . also can you list where your jetting is now main, pilot, acc. pump #, needl #, clip poss. are you running w/ air box lid off?

That makes alot of sense. That is the first thing I was going to do is replace the spark plugs. Are they pre gapped from the factory?Because the new ones I bought I just put them on.I am going up north this weekend and plan on getting into all this next weekend.Iknow I have a 147 (I believe) main jet ,Not sure about the needle setting. and the pilot.I'm sure it is something minor or stupid and will kick my self when it is figured out .Thanks for the help so far

The plugs are not pre-gapped, the plugs from NGK are just generic, but the DS gap isn't too far from where NGK distributes the plugs. I'd still check / set the gap though, especially if you are having problems. Start with new plugs, and also post the specs on what you were running as sam said; with that information people who run this carburetor on the forum can probably jet your carburetor for you without ever seeing your DS.

Tpsycho is sending you in the right direction. Do like he says and you'll be up and runing. Maybe you'll get lucky and it's just a bad connection at one or both coils. Your problem is NOT jetting. IMO

I Just Uploaded the Electrical Section from the DS Shop Manual. The Ignition System section covers the coils. But the other sections are worthy of attention in this case as well. One thing to remember is that on the DS ground connections are extreemly important.
