400ex lightened flywheel
#1
who should i send the flywheel to in order to get lightened. i am mainly interested in drag racing with periodic recreational riding. i know TC, rocky ridge, etc does it but i don't know if the quality of the job is better with one builder over another. also, i dont' really know how much i need to shave off. any suggestions would be great. thanks cal

lol this is a very very old post. i am not around here much at all. i am mainly at other forums where i find more valuable info for my style. however, yes i did do it. to sum up a long story, no, it is not worth it. i was several bike lengths slower when dragging. it didn't rev quicker at the lower rpms and it didn't rev as high in the upper rpms. all in all, i would not do it. maybe i should have sent the lightened one off to www.trailtech.com to see if they could balance it better than it was. maybe that was a problem. i don't know. i sent it off to www.gtthunder.com to have it done and he does fantastic work so i doubt that was a problem.

Well thanks for the reply then! I'm not wanting it to be straight out drag but just looking for a little faster rev since this seems to be the 400ex's problem.
I was going to send it to a guy in NY that is one of the best in the U.S.
What other forums do you frequent? Are they more 400ex related or what?

well i actually sold my 400ex a little over a year ago and now i am on a 450r. i was mainly on www.exriders.com when i had my 400ex. now i am still on there messing around and i am currently on other forums as well that pertain to 450's mainly. i just see too much utility info on this site and not enough in-depth tech info sport bikes.
for trail riding i wouldn't go much lighter on the flywheel. going lighter will make it stall easier. also, some people notice it not wanting to start or idle as good either.

by the way, if you are looking for a little quicker bike, i would suggest a drop in camshaft and a piston. you don't even need to go really drastic on the piston. a stock bore higher compression piston will be just fine. i would suggest a stock bore, 406, or 416 between 10.5:1 and 11:1 on the compression ratio. with this you can still run premium pump fuel. then throw in a hotcam stage 2 or somethign like that. the cam is probably around $125 and the piston is probably around that as well. then you just need gaskets. this will give you a very nice improvement over stock.

Well of course I'm always looking for more power. I'm not sure if the quad has ever been rebuilt but I do know it doesn't have a big bore of any kind on it. I've thought about a higher compression piston and cam but with the prices of the 440 kit it just seems like that'd be the way to go (especially for only $100 more approximately).

our 416 is actually faster than our 440. maybe if you get high dollar head work and other mods then the 440 might shine better. if i had to do it again i would get a 416 probably.

What all was done to your 416? I'm guessing you just bored it out to a 416 or was it a kit? I'm actually trying to find a high enough compression piston now and a carb kit so I can run alcohol. I've found a 426 with a 13:1 piston but that's as high as i can find. A good port and polish job would definately wake it up too.
