Messed up my axle bearings bad!!!!
#1
Hey guys, i havn't replaced my axle bearings since they have gone out about 3 months ago. i rode about 20+ miles with them bad. well now since i got to take them out they dont wanna budge at all. i got one side out after like an hour of punching it with a screwdriver and the other side.. well.. i got fed up tapping it out that i hit it with the screwdriver and the hammer as hard as i can and the inner race with the ***** came flying out into my garage "they flew like 20 some odd feet" (cool) well the outer race is still in the carrier.. Ive been soaking it with wd40 to eliminate the rust which is probable holding it in. and ife tryed heating the aluminum on the outside to expand it to get it out but im scarred to hit it with the hammer because i dont want to hurt the aluminum around it. Does someone know how i can get them out??? I have new bearings here and i got to ride sunday and monday. im about to flip out and just start banging and what happenes to the carrier happenes and nothing can b done about it... help!!!! thanks in advance!!!

Can you use some sort of 2x4 or other piece of wood that will fit, and tap it out with a hammer? What about a zawsall, with a metal blade. Dont F up your carrier!

clean all the excess wd40 off of the carrier,,,and throw the carrier in the oven
I actually use my kerosene heater and set the carrier on top of the cage for about 20 minutes. (so i dont have to smell my parts cooking)
anyway, bake at 250-300, then use a long enough pry bar, and bang it out from the inside.
Also be sure that the edges of the carrier (that recieve the bearing) arent all chewed up (which they probably are). You may need to re-chamfer the edge if it is damaged. (grinder/router)
with the aluminum expanded,,,,they will come out much easier
be sure to use oven mitts or welding gloves

Guys: thanks for your help.. i tryed heating it and it didn't work, i tryed punching it and it didn't work, I tryed using pliers and it didn't work.. i got so fed up so i figured let me hit it as hard as i can with a screw driver see if anything happenes... well i put the screw driver and with a sledge hammer pounded the race like half way out. I was so amazed.. I then started banging it with a hammer and finally about 30 min of banging with heat and wd40 i got it out. 1, it saved me a lot of money. 2, i get to race on sunday!!!! i put the new bearings in and im going out now to finish everything thanks you all for giving help.. oh yea and the carrier is in great shape.. no signs of the bang nor any scratches to the carrier.

hey. after my 1st race on the 24th my axle bearings went so we drilled a hole through my swing arm and then into the carrier and drilled and threaded a greese fitting into the hole and packed it full of greese so that i could race in heat 2. but im picking up my new bearings 2morrow so hopefully i can get the old ones out and if it the bearing breaks apart im just gonna weld the inside and that will make it shrink enough like docturbo said.

Heat the carrier for 5 minutes all around one side. Pick the carrier up with a glove and slam in down on a 2X4. The bearing will come right out every time. Then, heat the other side. When slamming the 2nd side down, leave the spacer sleeve in the carrier. It is the weight of the spacer sleeve hitting against the bearing that knocks it out.
