86 250r cant hold 6th gear

Hey guys,
Irecently went to dumont sand dunes by baker california with my R. I weigh about 205 lbs, have 21" Geckos and stock gearing, PSI pipe, k&n with outerwear (no lid). As I was riding across the flat areas in 6th gear, the motor could not hold rpm, and would decelerate forcing a downshift to 5th. there is only about 3 rides on a fresh topend. Im thinking maybe main jet is a hare too rich, cuz if the bike is idling and you rev it hard, smoke comes out pretty thick, thick enough to see easily anyways. Is it normal for an R to not hold 6th gear just cuz its in the sand? Thanks for any help you can offer...

Drop your counter to a 12. 12-38 12-39 work good for sand on the 86. same bike I've had for 10 yrs. Sound like you need to jet down one size on your main. does it smoke when the bike is warm? Whare do you usualy ride? There might be a elevation factor.

I have not been to the dunes yet with the PSI. I had an FMF fatty when this problem occured. It seems to run better with the PSI pipe. Im thinking an ESR will be next.

If you have no porting and stock compressoin. I would say your pretty close. maybe a 158. Before you jett try changing your gearing. In this sport one thing I have learned is to only chane one thing at a time. when peaple have probs with there bikes, a lot of them but 10 things at once to fix it. it only makes it more diffacult to find out what the prob was/is. do small changes at a time so you can pin point every nook and crannie problem. re grear. ride and then decide if that was the prob. most likely its just your gearing. I hope you understand my point a lot of peps dont. (more or less my best friend I dragged into this sport and think they know everythig lol).
