try loggging in, in safe mode. Then if you are running windows xp do a system restore and see if that helps. If you are still having problems after the restore boot up again in safe mode and get on the net and go to trendmicro and do a free online virus scan (house call on their website).

Well, i know its kind of late, but on my computer(with windows XP), i can access all of my saved stuff from everyone elses log in name. so you can do that until your homework is done, then just fix it when you have some time.

the problem is that i can boot up, but not get into windows and access any programs or anything, i am on my mom's computer right now.

Bad times....... sounds like you are going to lose everything unless you are running dual hard drives in your computer and are good enough in MS-DOS to transfer files that you would like to keep to a different hard drive. Then put in a windows disc and format that puppy. Format C:\(enter)

You sound like you have a Dell with the XP operating system. Just kidding, I had the same thing, log into my account and my desktop would come on but nothing else would run. I went around this with F8 and operating in safe mode. You will probably have to do a total restore with the drivers that came with your computer, later. What program are you trying to use? If it doesn't work in safe mode, just reinstall it(the program) with the appropriate driver disc.

Had the exact same problem 2 days ago. It has something to do with Lava Soft & Ad-Aware.
THIS REALLY WORKS!! (go to bottom of reply for link)
You will have to use your Windows XP CD-ROM and press R to start the Recovery Console.
Next:
cd system32
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
exit
Remove windows CD and restart. Login with a user that has administrator rights.
Using regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Windows NT
CurrentVersion
Winlogon
Locate Userinit in the value column, right-click this item, and choose modify.
Replace wsaupdater.exe with userinit.exe
Restart your computer!!!
It sounds like a lot of work but it's not - just follow the instructions and you have your system back...
