Anybody run 22" Sand Stars on a Scrambler 400
#1
Right now I have a trail port, HSP pipe, 39 PWK, trail lightened flywheel, milled head, and a clutch kit (and a few other things). I run Sand Sharks right now but I want to get some Sand Stars. A reliable source says to get the 22" tires, but I'm afraid I'll sacrifice some low end. Has anyone run the 22" on a similar bike to mine?

I couldn't run the 22's on my bike cause I was afraid the nerfs would hit the paddles. I ran with the 20's and they hook up good. I also have a set of 22" haulers and they do awesome. I just thought I would try a V paddle for a change and really like the Sand Stars. They don't hook up quite as well as the Haulers but slide really well with around 6lbs of air. I wouldn't be afraid of losing any bottom end with the mods you have if you have stock gearing. I ran with 14 tooth countersprocket and hated it. If you don't have nerfs to deal with then I'd say go for it on the 22" tires. That is the stock size tire that comes with the bike. You'll love'em compared to the sharks. Night and day difference.

I have 22" edges on my wifes bike and it works excelllent. I used to have 20" sand skate ll's on it and everytime she stopped on a little incline they would just bury theirselves. With the 22's on it it just walks right on out on about any incline if you stop and take off again. She loves them.

eab, what is reacting the pwk with hot seat pipe?
must be a cool trail setup,i've never ran the hot seat with pwk, just tmx wich was great around response, but the keihin must be top better.
i wouls stay with 22" tires on the 400,with 20" you get more spin and
it take more r's for the engine to come up in the torque band,,,
and that note even better for that engine,at least you can play with the gearing to come to a closer ratio, but it will not be broader than 22" tires.

EAB just come over and get the 22 sandstars. You won't be disapointed and if you are and have only one dune trip on them I'll buy them back from you. This is your reliable source talking.

Scramblered, I went with the PWK because I heard they were easier to tune. It seams to work well with this pipe, I'm a little rich down low now but it has good response and I can really feel it pull after half throttle.

To update, I picked up the 22X11X10 Sand Stars on Thursday and headed out to Glamis on Friday night. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! My last trip out I was at 28mph at Olds with the 20 inch Sand Sharks, this time I was at 34mph with the 22 inch Sand Stars (GPS measured) and no other changes. Plus I can pull the front end up a lot easier even from a good roll. So I'm very happy and I cant imagine that the 20s would give me any more torque benifit. (just waiting for the 'I told you so')
