Sand Tires for 400EX
#1
I need to get some sand tires for riding at Pismo--the stockers just don't cut it anymore. At any rate, what is everyone's opinions on the brand, size, and type that seems to work the best. I need something for all types of riding on sand--bowls, climbing dunes, rec riding, etc.

I got 20x12x9 Kenda Trakkers, because I wanted to mount them on the stock rims (couldn't afford new rims). I'm really happy with them, they hooked up really well, climbed hills no problem, turning was sharp and predictable, and they weren't too much paddle for the stock motor (didn't bog it down).

I have heard from many people and write ups that the best sand tire for the stock 400ex is 8 paddle gliders, or 7 paddle haulers. I use 8 paddle haulers, but I also run a 426 setup. I have no trouble with power to turn them.

I've ridden a 400EX with Sand Skate IIs and I think they are too much tire. The machine had FMF exhaust and it couldn't powerfully pull 3rd gear at Glamis. Second gear, no problem, but it would hit the rev limiter once in a while. I bet a tire with less traction would be a better setup.

I have sand skate II's and they work awesome, this past labor day weekend, I went to sand lake in oregon and I climbed every tree line hill there. Banshees were even getting stuck. But anyways, with a stock motor they work great, and a built motor they work awesome.

They make those V shaped paddle tires and of course the straight paddles. A friend and I order one set of each for our 400EXs. Just as someone had posted on the internet. The V shaped paddles work best for riders under 180 pounds and the straight paddles for people like me over 180 pounds. My friend weighs less than 140 pounds and found the V shaped paddle worked best, while I found the straight paddle worked better for me. Just as the internet suggested.

It depends on a few things. I run SandSkat I's on my 250R with 10" rims. The lower profile sidewall reduces flex when turning. I prefer the chevron paddles as they let you turn easier. My wife's 250R has Skattraks with the chevron paddles, also an excellent tire. SandSkat II's are probably a bit too aggressive for a stock 400, as my friend runs them on his 250R and does well with them but they tend to loft the front end at times you don't want it to happen. You need paddles that you can spin easily. If all you want to do is go straight up a dune, get straight paddles. If you like to dune and ride all over, get the chevron paddles as you can turn much easier. Straight cuts will let you hang on the side of a bowl easier, but I have found that some throttle will hold me there with my chevron paddles. I would reccomend SandSkat I's on 10" rims. I've been very happy with them.

Actually, I got my SandSkat I's when I bought my quad, they came with it. I had a pair of straight cut SkatTraks from my old machine. I imagine you can get the "I"s from Chapparral. I don't know the web site address though. Maybe a friend of yours has a cataloge, or could someone help out here with a URL?
