Default Honda 250r rod and piston

I have an 87 TRX250r and I got a connecting rod that is too short. It was supposed to fit years 86-89. When I put it together, the piston hit the crank. Does anyone know what I can do about this without splitting the case again and putting a new rod in? Some say I can shave the piston skirt down until it works, others say I can find a different piston with a shorter skirt, and still others say I need to get the longer rod. Anyone knowledgeable about this please respond.

The 86 uses a shorter rod than the later year TRX's so you need an 86 piston also. The wrist pin is located 5mm lower on the 86 pistons vs the 87-89. The cranks and cylinders will interchange with all years.
