What should I pay for a new 2004 Honda Rancher?
#1
Hi,
I want to buy a new 2004 Honda Rancher. MSRP is $3,899.00. What should I pay for it? I want to make sure I don't get ripped off as this is my first ATV purchase.
Thanks!

Heidi, I'm guessing the Rancher for which refer as the "base" model is the two wheel drive 350 manual shift. If this is the case than 3,899 sounds like a good deal to me. My buddy bought a new 2001 4x2 350 back in 2002 few years ago and paid around 4,250. So 3,899 to me is again a good deal.
I notice you live in Seattle, just wondering if you plan on riding in the snow? If so I would get the 4x4 for an extra $500. Either way the Rancher is an excelent ATV. You'll have loads of fun.

Many dealers sell at or above MSRP (freight and setup charges). However in WV, you can buy one for less than MSRP with no freight or setup charges. We go over the line from Maryland so we don't pay sales tax either. Not an issue here since you don't have to register an ATV (and this state provides nothing to the the ATV community that warrants collecting any fees).
Shop until you find a deal or even buy from another state and have it shipped. I know Mississippi has quite a few dealers selling at low prices too.
I purchased a Honda 400ex for $400 under MSRP.

I can't avoid sales tax by buying it in another state as we have to license our ATV's but if I could save enough it wouldn't matter. There is a website called Cyclecom and they have dealer invoice prices so you can see what they are paying. It's 20.00 for 2 different ATV's but I was thinking if I have that info it may save me $$ in the long run. Some of these dealers here in WA do not want to budge on price, it's kind of frustrating. People seem to be able to get better deals in other states. I am that kind of person that if I find out later that I did not get the best deal possible I will be pissed forever!

Heidi, I've found all Honda dealers tough to deal with that way.their stinkin' attitude is that if you don't want to pay it, someone else will because it's a Honda. they're very elitist that way. can't buy it out of Oregon huh?? i think if you could get it for MSRP with NO Freight, NO PDI, NO dealer doc fees, that'd be a fair deal (all that bs crap usually totals $350). you could try to play them all against each other, OR, say this is what i'm willing to pay out the door, anyone interested in selling it to me for that price? (I.e $4000 OTD). there's usually at least one hungry dealer around somewhere. there are several dealers in your area if you tried emailing the ones from Arlington to Chehalis/centralia, and see who's willing to play.
generally, on an import car, 10-15% off would be about as good as you could expect. atvs/ dirtbikes seems a lot tougher to get deals on. some dealers have promos where they're trying to move out old stock, OR, they might load up on one model thru a special promotion from Honda (i saw one dealer with great prices on the 300EX only). but then you'll get the full freight, pdi, doc fee BS.
I found Suzuki and Yamaha way more willing to negotiate and consequently bought a Yamaha at almost 15% less than MSRP, with a winch!!

Well, I got the dealer invoice report off of cyclebuy.com and now at least I have that to look at so I know what they are making off of the sale. I have one dealer so far that seems willing to negotiate but I have already had 2 that wouldn't budge at all. I can go to OR but I will have to pay the sales tax when I go to register the bikes so it doesn't save me there. If someone is willing to deal down ther it may be worth it. I guess I will just start calling around and see what I can do. Wish me luck!

so what does cyclebuy claim they're worth?
what's interesting is all the other incentives over and above the $$ made off the sale. for example, volume sales bonuses from Honda (if they sell X amount of units or gross sales overall, they get a certain % back from Honda.... could work out to thousands), financing incentives to dealer (if you finance, the finance Co. gives dealer a % of profit, the more business they place with finance Co., the more the % goes up= more $$ to dealer).
IF you do get a good deal, i'd at least try to see if your local dealer, or dealer you'd most like to deal with , can match price, because for follow-up service and warranty issues, it's nice to be able to deal with your local guy and have a good relationship, rather than have them acrimonious that you bought elsewhere.
