Default deciding on a service manual vs shop doing maintance...

ok i dont know 1 thing about atv's....the shop does all the oil changes etc. i am getting fed up with paying 130 for a 30dollar diy self job. do the manauls tell you step by step what to do, and how exectly to do it at the 50/100hr etc periods? do they list a actual time line of when things should be done? what to greese etc? what i am really asking is someone with no know how about atv's beable to do the maintance easily with a manual? i know polaris sells the oil change kits, but when i see the dealers check list alot more is done then just oil, like hub fluid changed, gear oil changed, lubed this, lubed that changed this and what not.

oh and one more thing, besides the normal "recommendations" to rape you, they told me my "belt" was starting to make noise. it is a 04 scrambler and had the belt replaced under warrenty within 2 months of getting it not know about the belt and smoking it trying to tow someone out. dont the belts have a lifetime warrenty? im not gonna replace it, it seems to run ok to me but when the time comes should i make polaris replace it or is it only a one time thing they will replace it?

thanks!

if you're at all mechanically inclined or have a buddy that is, a factory service manual will save you alot of money!!!!

dont get those crappy "hayes" or "chiltons". the factory ones are the most informative. depending on where you look, you can find them for 30 - 50 bucks. i bought mine on ebay for 35, and it came with a cd rom version for the computer.

i just cant stand paying someone else to do something that i know i can do.

the money you save, you could spend on modding your scrambler and make it faster, or at least cooler.

We didnt have any idea about atv's when we got them, but we picked up some service manuals to do what we can. We got them for 2 of our 3 wheelers (the 250s are similar), and they payed for themselves very quickly. Now when we have a problem, expected (oil change etc) or unexpected (branch throught the cv boot ) we can look in the manual to see if it is a job better suited for us or the dealer. Pretty much however experienced you are, the oil changes alone will probably pay for the manual, and you can probably do most of the repairs to encounter yourself.
Id say definetly buy it if you are AT ALL comfortable with common tools.

hey thanks...my main question is i dont know what needs to be done at the 50/100 hr intervals etc. i understand diff things are done at diff times. will the manual tell you what to do and how to do it? like i know the gear oil and etc needs to be done also, but dont know when or how. the manual lists what should be done and how?

Also try ebay for your service manual. I bought a service manual cd rom for my 2003 Trailbosses on ebay for $5.99 last month, since this is my first time owning an atv it has been very helpful.

I'm not having any luck finding a service manual for my '99 300 Explorer. Most of the ones I do run across are not Polaris brand, and these seem like they cover my atv as an afterthought, rather than specifically the Explorer. Don't wanna waste the cash and buy something that "sorta" covers my bike. Any suggestions???

Bite the bullet and order the correct manual from your dealer. It'll more than pay for itself. According to the website, it's only $39.99. Small price to be for all the info to take proper care of your quad.

That's the Haynes manual and as others have mentioned, you're better off with the factory Polaris manual.
