i read in a past post if you need more than 2 1/2 turns out then you need a bigger pilot jet, correct me if i am wrong someone, mine personally is set at 4 turns out but the weather is getting down to 25 degrees at night and i just had my back worked on so i am not gonna worry about mine till next spring, thats just how i understand the screw, if i told him wrong someone please correct me, later

The mixture screw is the fine tune , on the pilot jet.
Gotta be careful when screwing it all the way in, if you bottom it out tight...it will deform.
One way to adjust the mixture screw, is to warm the motor. Set the screw at 2 turns out from lightly seated, and start the motor. Slowly screw it in, until the rpms drop. From here count the turns, going out, until the rpms drop again. In the middle of those two spots, is the place to leave it.
If you get to 4 turns, from all the way in, and the rpms dont drop..the pilot jet is too small. If while turning the screw in, the rpms dont drop, before bottoming, then the pilot jet is too big.

Thanks for the help. The reason i asked is that it was turned out at least 5 from the dealer.
No i did not smash it to the stops.I put it at 3 out, checked my plugs and they are a
light tan now instead of black and wet.Ive learned just enough to get myself in trouble, but
i rode for 3hrs today and it ran better than it ever has.

I went through this same situation. The screw on mine stock was 2 1/2 turns. I had modded the exhaust end cap and then got popping in the air box. I then went out 3 turns and it corrected the problem. Hope this helps. D
