1996 Trail boss qustions

I've had my daughters trailboss for a few years now, I've really done nothing to the darn thing. Just add oil and lube the chain stuff. But now the starter seems to have gone bad. I replaced the battery blindly thinking that was it. But it turns out its the starter. I tappped on it with a piece of pipe thru the frontend and it cranked over a couple times. How tough are they to remove? and what usually goes bad? brushes? Also I was considering doing away with the oil injector and running premix, it seems to run a little rich at times. Also where is a good place to buy parts? I would'nt mind doing a few mods and droppping a couple hundred in to this reliable old machine. I hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

i too have a 96 trail boss. ive had it for about 4 years now and let me tell you, i have put it through some paces. it has been a tough machine. i was always the one pulling my buddies out of the hole i just rode thru.
i have i have found several starters on ebay.usually around 100 bucks.
when i replaced my starter, i also found that i had to replace the bendix, which is a gear that goes inbetween the starter and flywheel. the easiest way to get to the starter is to stand the quad up onto the rear bar. that way its at eye level. some basic tools and a little mechanical ability will lead you the rest of the way. its not too hard. my old starter was just thrashed. the seals on it had disappeared in it had obviously been under water too many times.
i recently replaced the motor in it too, but the old motor still ran ok. i just found a smokin deal on a fresh motor. i gave it to my girlfriend so she could go ride with the boys. oh yeah, and she wanted it purple.
at least now my buddies wont want to ride it!!

Well I have it up end, have the skid plates and the pull starter off, there seems to be a bolt behind the starter on the bracket not allowing the starter to come out. So I have the clutch cover off now wondering on how I should preceed. How tough is it to pull the clutches so I can get in behind the starter to remove that bolt. I figure I should just buy the whole works and go new since its a little bit of a challange to tear into it. I see talk on other threads about replacing the spring in the clutch. is that a good mod?

Yeah the two stroke starters are in a bad place, They arent to hard to rebuild did it twice once on a scrambler and an older trailboss. You can get the starter out if you tip the machine up front wheels in the air, remove the skid plate and you will see the starter there its kinda tricky to get out this way, but it can be done. The other is to remove the clutch cover and the clutches then remove the rear clutch cover. Much more labor intensive. I prefer the standing up method. Good luck.
