01 Polaris Scrambler 500 4X4...what to look for?
#1
Might have found the deal if it pans out.
What should I look for on this critter to make sure it's in good shape? What is the good/bad & the ugly on it?
I like the looks of this machine and I believe enough aftermarket parts are available for it to do the limited "utility" functions that I would need and still be fun to drive?
Thanks,
James

Check the tires and if they are still stock that means it hasnt been rode a lot.Look at the chain and sprockets for wear and look at the tranny around the chain and be sure it hasnt been welded.Check the tierod ends and steering post bushings.Pull the hood off and check the fliud inthe radiator. Not just in the resivor.Make sure it is full of oil.Actually a good clean machine is ussually in good shape.

look for how worn off the paint is on the floor boards, and the bottom of the a-arms. this will be a good indication of the amount of use.
also look into the deepest cranny you can see in and around the engine and tranny. see if theres mud caked in there, or if there is dirt up in there, see what it is(sand, rocks, grass, leaves, dirt, oil?). this shoud indicate the types of terrain it has been ridden in, and show you just how clean the machine really is.
just a few ideas,

Shove the back end side to side and watch around the swing arm to look for movement. Grab the top of the front wheels and to the same to see if the bearings have been kept up on.

Thanks guys.....good info!
Also looking at a 2000 model...any differences?
Also will these models function decently as a utility ATV as well...ie racks, plow etc? I see these are available but didn't know what to think without a low range.

check all the grease zerks (u-joints/yoke in the front driveline, a-arms, swingarm pivots, axle carrier, underneath front hubs)
they will either look like they have been accessed and greased,,,,,,or they will look dormant and untouched
grease is good
and,,,,,what everyone else said
