for the turbo guys- oil filter issues!
#1
I'm passing on a message from Kelly @ KMS.
There have been 3 or 4 turbos on DS 650's that have worn out the turbo shaft ($300 to replace) and started dripping oil into the compressor pipes and ultimately blowing smoke out the tail pipe under moderate to high boost(9-12 psi) The bikes range from desert racers, duners, to strickly asphalt racers and have the same wear characteristics. The raptors are not having the same problems. The wear appears to be happening due to fine particulate in the oil that is not being removed by the oil filter. After some fact finding it appears that Champion( the maker of the oil filter that Bomb uses) rates their filter down to 90 microns due to the construction of the filter. The yahama filters are rated at 20 microns and are simply a superior filter. Kelly reccomends that turbo DS's run an after market filter like the reuseable Stainless mesh style which are supposed to filter down to 15 microns to avoid damaging the turbo shaft. Frequent oil changes are also a must to preserve the turbo shafts ( basically every weekend you ride ) word to the wise!

do you have the champion part number I am at work so i will try and cross refrence it with other makers to see if they can do better.

Where is the best place for the best price to get one the reusable filter? There was a thread recently that talked about the reusable filtering to 30 microns. Which reusable filters the best?

Here's what I found in my Favorites under Oil Filter. . .
Other - Past Forum Thread
Got mine Here! ($64.95) - Pretty quick payback for the turbo guys.

thanks for the info. another thing to consider is the source of the oil for the turbo - I never liked the idea of the return oil feed as the source - hot, dirty, might contain air bubbles or foam. and the minimum recommended oil pressure specs for garrett plain bearing turbos i've found were ~30psi.
does anyone know (for sure) if the oil pressure sensor port is on the clean or dirty side of the oil filter?

I ordered mine from the same place as "Duneme". Just so you know though the long filter which fits '02 to '05 DS's are $79.00 not $64.00. It is the 2 3/4 inch filter and costs a little extra. But I can say that I have been worried about the stock paper filter that comes from Champion after I went to do a oil change and found a 1 1/2 inch rip in the paper, so I started checking out the ss filters and ordered one. It kinda seemed like a lot of money, but when you think about it $80 for a filter, and piece of mind is not bad. I was paying $12 for a single filter where I live in Florida and was pissed when I saw that ripped filter after I changed my oil. I do not own a turbo, but have alot of after goodies on my bike and really think that $80 is a small price to pay when its all said and done.
