Default Starter question for Scrambler 400

I was wondering how hard it is to change the starter on a 1999 Scrambler 400 4wd, Mine quit and either needs taken off and cleaned or replaced. I'm not really sure where the starter is even located at on this quad. So I kind of need to know how to get to it and do I need any special tools to do the job.

Default Starter question for Scrambler 400

its pretty easy to take off..youll need to pull the recoil housing off the engine, take the 2 bolts out and then you need to take your clutch cover, the clutches and also the inner cover off, there is a bracket bolted to the starter and the frame, take the 2 bolts that are bolted to the frame out and then the starter will come out after you remove the wires of cource..you will need a clutch puller to get your primary clutch off..hope this helps..

You can get from the bottom also tip up the machine and remove the skid plate. Little tricky but it can be done. lot less parts to remove.

Somebody told me you could get to it that way, but I didn't think that was possible.

Yeah, as Vig suggested you can go from the bottom alot easier. I just flipped mine up and let it stand on the rear grab bar and then it's really easy once you remove the skid plate. It's actually pretty stable once you stand it up like that.
Chances are your brushes just need replacing. Pull the starter and check those. It's alot cheaper than replacing the whole starter.
