i'm looking at the kawi Bayou 250, Yama Bruin 250 & Honda Recon 250. Obviously looking at inexpensive new models but want the best performance. I've ridden all my life and have had 2 mojaves, 3 bayous etc. in the past. I just want to trail ride & rip a little. I would have bought a lakota but not available.

Of the 250 class I'd rank them this way:
#1 - Suzuki Ozark
#2 - Honda Recon (but the Ozark and Recon are almost too close to call so personal preferance and price can be the deciding factor)
#3 - Yamaha Bruin
#4 - Kawi Bayou
It could also be worth looking at the Bomb. Rally. Not too familiar with it but from the reviews it should sit in #3 in my list.

The bayou is considered a pure utility machine, due to the design of the front suspension. Its a weak design and isnt very rugged .
The honda and suzuki are about equals, same power, same easy to ride, and same quality.
Of the 3 you list, the honda is far above the other two.

Duke,
I haven't ridden any of these, so I really can't help you. The one thing to remember about the internet is some people are brand biased and whether they have ridden the specific model or not, they will still recommend their favorite brand. Also some people really know their stuff. Just be careful what you take in when you are reading here. Truly your best bet is to test drive before buying.

Our Recon has been a superb machine. Years of trouble free service. If you don't need the racks and fender coverage, skip it and get a 250EX, which is the same bike but 50 lbs. lighter. In terms of performance, the EX will do anything the Recon will, yet the ride is more sporty.
