Default Scrambler & Sport weight reduction, handling and brake questions

I own a 1999 Sport 400 that I race and was wondering what everyone on this forum has done to reduce the weight of their Scramblers and Sports?The type of racing that I do is mainly flattrack and ATV Rodeo events so I need to retain my handling and braking capabilities.The class that I race the Sport in consists mainly of Banshee's, Scramblers, a few Sports, a couple of 250R's and Quadracers.

I was also wondering if anyone on this forum has changed their brakes and rotors to an aftermarket setup?When going into a corner I find myself having to start getting on the brakes sooner than the other quads.With the weight of the Sport and the motor mods that I have made slowing down is a major downfall of this quad.I've been looking into some aftermarket rotors but would really like some feedback from other riders who have tried various setups before making an investment in them.

Does anyone know of a way to lower the Sport?

The mods that I have made to the Sport so far are 21/7/10 front tires, 20/11/10 Titan Turf Tamers on the rear, different front and rear sprockets depending on the track, wheel spacers front and rear, aftermarket handlebars, removed airbox w/clamp on K&N airfilter w/outerwear, 38mm carb rejetted, Delta 2 V-Force reedcage, reedcage spacer, Hot Seat pump gas billet head, Hot Seat pipe and silencer, Hot Seat clutch kit and removed mudflaps.

Have you removed your fan, battery, starter, floorboards? What type wheels do you run?
I have taken everything off of mine that absolutely dosent need to be there.- shift linkage, tool tube, lites, reverse gear, oil tank, ect. But all I do is race in a strait line.... these bikes are heavy no matter what you do. If you have access to a mig you can replace some of the steel- frame box tubing with chrome molly tubing
On the brake issue, Have you got the hot seat rear split brake kit? I think that mite help stopping a little.
The way I lowered my front end would definately not work for you. But on the rear I used a spring off of an 85 xr200. Lowered the rear 5"

Dont know about the weight but for your braking situation try going to a TEAM roller secondary it will slow you down juske engine braking and give you instant response.

I agree with Whitedog,no matter what you remove these things are heavy.I lowered my front end by cutting off the upper strut mount and moving it up 2 1/2 ".I lowered the rear by moving the shock mount back some.

Thank's for all of the replys so far.

Whitedog, I'm still running the steel rims, but will be switching to alloy rims with 18/11/8 tires on the rear.I'm also still running the fan, starter, battery and floorboards.If there was a kickstarter available for the Sport I would take the electric starter off, but I just hate pull starting it because it reminds me of starting a pushmower.I've seriously considered replacing the floorboards with nerfbars, but am still undecided at this point.I need some sort of protection there for flattrack racing to keep other riders wheels from getting caught in that area if they get to close.

I checked out the pictures of your Scrambler and that is definately a sharp quad.You've really put some time and money into that machine.Do you have any drag times for it?Do you guys race 300 feet or an 1/8th mile?

FFWLH, I never thought about the Team roller secondary, but it sounds like something that I need to check out.I'll give Hot Seat a call this week and check with them about it.Thank's

CED, that's a nice Scrambler that you have also.There is definately some very seriouslly modified Scramblers on this forum.I've gotten some pics of my Sport posted in my albums on my Yahoo profile page if you guys want to check them out.I'm listed as waahehe94 in the members directory on Yahoo.

CED, I just got finished checking out the pictures of your Scrambler.That is one extremely bad Polaris!!!!The only pictures that I think that the front end is on the ground is when it is sitting still.lol.

you would be better off calling hpd,their setup is much better than hsp..

I own a 1996 scrambler 400 4x4. yes the scramblers need to go on a diet wieghing in at 500-600 lbs. But i wanted to give you a little tip if you plan on doing the brake system over. Replace the stock hose coming from the main brake leaver. Over time this hose gains flexability and you lose stopping power. When you replace it use a steel hose. I bet you have some more stopping power after that!

Another thing you can do on the brakes is change the hoses around on the caliper it changes the porportioning of the fluid and gives you more brake with the foot pedle and les rear brake witht he hand lever.

my brakes seem to work alot better now that i converted them over to where the brake lever controls just the fronts and the foot lever controls just the rear.it didnt cost anything to convert and was really simple..
