An 04 needing rings already…bummer.
You can go CP pistons from RWR or you could go with JE pistons from MrHp.
The CP’s are about 100 bucks or so cheaper. But they are heavier also.
You can get 12:1 compression from either of these builders
You can also get a Pami piston from TheBom. Don’t know how they comare in price though. You would have to PM him and ask.
You don’t have to pull the motor. You can either pull all the motor mount bolts except the rear upper one that is behind the drive sprocket (kinda) and just tilt the motor forward. Or you can remove just the upper motor mount that is connecting the head to the frame. Then use a die grinder or something similar and take a small amount of material off either the head or the frame weld.

As far as which one is the best piston. I personally run and like the 14:1 JE that MrHp sells.
At the same time I had no complaints about the RWR piston when I ran it either. But the torque is much better with the 14:1. But the race gas costs about 3 bucks a gallon more than premium pump gas too.

Default couple questions about what piston

If you think you just need new rings and a piston, there are lots of stock size pistons available. The cylinder on the DS does not have a sleeve. Its nikasil plated on on the aluminum cylinder. Unless you are really going to go for it with some bucks for a big bore, you may want to consider staying with the stock size. There are a few guys in here that have slightly increased the cylinder and piston size.

When my cylinder needed attention. I sent it to RWR and they sent it off to have it re-nikasiled. At that time it was around 165 bucks I think. That was about a year or so ago.
