DS650 Need Help! Any ideas?
#1
Hi guys. Maybe someone can help me out. I have a 2001 DS 650 with low hours. It is a great machine and I LOVE IT. You'll find me ripping around the trials in Northern WI every time I get a chance. Since I came back from my last trip I can't seem to get my Bomber to run. I am not a pro but a pretty handy mechanic and do just fine with my sleds but I am not sure where to go with this thing and since the engine is a little different than the 2 strokes I am used to I thought I would throw out a question. I checked the obvious - fuel, fuel line, fuel tank vent, spark, spark plugs, etc. I also pulled my carb and thouroughly cleaned and inspected. I must admit that there was a little dirt in there. Probably silt from the sandy trails (or the muddy parts) up north that went through my air cleaner. Either way I thouroughly cleaned and inspected the carb and there seems to be no issue. The bowl fills with fuel cause I can drain it out of the overflow. I can see and smell plenty of fuel and even get a little fuel mist blow back on my hand when I crank it over with my hand near the rear of the carb with the air intake off. The plugs dont really seem very wet when I turn it over though. I even tried to open the carb up and squirt a little starting fluid right through the carb. The only thing that I can think of is a valve or timing chain issue but there has been no trauma to the machine and it is pretty new so it seems unlikely that the timing chain has slipped or broken. Any ideas are appreciated.

if your machine is an '01 with very few hours, your battery might have puked out on you. Just had to replace mine. I opted for the Odyssey PC 545 from Sunn battery. It seemed to be the battery of choice fo rthose who replaced them and I can honestly say that I'm impressed with mine. Not to mention it's cheaper than the stock battery.

I think your on the right track, how abot compresion? can you check it? . valves might need checking too. did you change plugs? or just check? might want to change just to eliminate that question.

This may sound a little stupid but the run switch position could be messing with you. Just like we all do, turn the key on and crank and crank and then go...oh oops....click to run. Now I am not saying this is your exact problem but possibly the contacts in that circuit. If your getting a spark...then I seriously doubt my comment is the issue....but maybe something along this line....

I like the way you think BajaX04 but I actually checked that out. I got it a little wet (a little muddy) so I thought the same but when I took apart the switch enclosure on the handle bar I found it to be a very simple switch and a no brainer that it was getting connection. Plus it was getting spark.

you say you have good spark, is it good all the time or does the intensity of the spark vary? I had my trigger coil go out on me it, the spark was good some of the time and weak to non-existent other times. Turn the bike over 10 or so times and check the consistency of the spark- check both wires.
