To me, the Rancher is a mid size machine, and that is what makes it special. It's not a kids bike like the Recon, but it isn't some heavy monster either. You go hanging huge tires on it, and you destroy its agile handling. I would never go over 25" tires on it. If you want to build a mud monster, you need to start with a bigger machine, with more motor.

As for the engine, I run an FMF MegaMaxII exhaust and UNI air filter (I don't trust K&N). For tires, Holeshot ATR's on ITP rims. Makes the bike way more sporty!

I have to go with reconranger in this one. The agility and handling characteristics of the Rancher are some of its strongest attributes. Start trying to make soemthing out of it that it is not and you may both ruin the good things about the Rancher while also failing to achieve whatever it was you set out to do. I would go with 25" tires custom picking a tread pattern that suited you riding situations and terrain. Otherwise, sell the Rancher and get a different ATV if it's a different ATV that you really want.

Other than the fact that everyone generally wants to go higher, bigger more, is the anything in particular that your Rancher is not doing for you that bigger tires would change?

I have a '01 Rancher. I'm running the 25" Titan 489AT's. The 8" wide on the front and the 10" wide on the rear. I also installed the ITP Black Cast Aluminum wheels. ( 12x7 wheel size ) This is the biggest and most aggressive tires I would install without some engine mods. I do not have any engine mods yet. Other than the tire/wheel upgrade, the best mod I made was installing the Warn Unlocker. It's worth the $$$$.

I am running 25" itp mudlites on mine and dont have any problem turning them. If i was to do it again i would go with the 26" mudlites.
