500 to 500HO conversion

What is differnt between the 500 and the 500HO other than the throttlebody? Can you just change the throttlebody to give it more power? What else can you do to these engines to make them more powerful? I'm specifically looking at a 96 sportsman 500, and debating whether I should just spend more money to get an HO.

Get a 500HO. With mild mods, k&N, EPI clutch kit, and Iridium spark plug, you will never want to ride your 96 again!!! My 2 cents. I think also, that it would be alot of work and expense to upgrade what you got.

it wouldn't be worth the expense to upgrade.. sell your 500 and just purchase an h.o.
You could purchase a 2001 h.o. cheaper than you could upgrade your 96 considering
the price you'd get for your 96...

I just bought the thing today for $2250. It has a few minor issues, but nothing I can't fix really cheap with a little labor.
If it's only a cam and throttle body, then I bet I could get those a lot cheaper than spending $2000 more on a different quad.

Welcome to the forums. Do you mean carb instead of throttle body? It uses a carburetor. The HO has a 40mm Mikuni carb, while the non HO uses a 36mm Mikuni. I think it also has slightly different clutching. Don't quote me on that last one, as I am not postitive. A different primary and/or secondary spring would be your first step to making more power. This engine makes enough power. It just needs some clutch work done to bring out its true potential. If you want to spend more money you can always get a heelclicker clutch kit instead of changing the primary and the secondary.
-I know for sure the HO uses a different cam and a bigger carburetor. It might have different clutching too.-

I have a Heel Clicker on mine, I have ordered a white spring for mine but what I have seen seems ok, I have seen cams on a site but around 300 bucks. I would suggest a Heel Clicker and maybe an exhaust system, which I have ordered and am waiting on, also I have ordered a dial-a-jet,which I hope adds some more power. But I think if you want a little more just add a few heres and theres like Im doing to get the power you want.

What intake and exhaust kits do you recommend?
I guess I did mean carb, not throttlebody. I'm too used to Fuel Injection on my jeep
I checked out the heelclicker, but I don't understand what it does. They need to put more time into their website.

Im not going to recommend any thing yet. Not untill I try it, but I will say that I have spent a lot of time investagating these things. Heel Clicker is some weights and springs to install on both primary and secondary clutchs, fairly easy install for some 1 with some mechanical background but as for me im still playing with it to find my setup. You can get this from (COB) at www.atvquadsquad.com there is a Heel Clicker post, for around $160 cheaper there than the heel clicker site. I would get a K&N airfilter I have 1 seems ok, I ordered a Big GUN exhast system but I think theres 1 better at hotseatperformance.com but you will spend about $370 for a system or $200 for just the pipe, you can get a white brothers e series muffler &150 but will have to do mods to the stock pipe. But I can point you in some directions but there are others that may say do other things, but just do some research and check into these things. Also you will find there are places a lot cheaper than others.
