I was out this Weekend ridieing with some buddies and my 600 Twin over heated....It happened toward the end of the day...I thinking that My Radiator got muddy ...
Is this a common problem with this 600 polaris ?
What kind of tips can I do to keep my SP 600 running cool ?

if your radiator did get muddy. you can clean it now and then before the next time you go riding spray it down with Pam cooking spray..will help mud not gum up your radiator

 

Was your fan cycleing on and off? The only time mine has overheated was when the fan froze after rideing in the snow. The radiator has barely ever gotten dirty in the mud, snow, & and water that I've been through. The screen on the front will get packed but theres still room for air to get down through the radiator from the top.

Here's what i found;

1. the radiator must be 75% clean to cool the sportsman
2. the fan must be able to run
3. You CAN NOT clean the radiator by hoseing it off through the front screen
4. your radiator cap must be on tight, it will never cool off if it's loose or the rubber seal is worn out
5. if you over heated one time ... you WILL be low on coolant in the radiator

How to stop it from over heating;

1. clean the radiator after each ride, by hoseing from the front - top to bottom - with the screen removed ... most people don't do this and once they look under the hood they see that 50% of the radiator is clogged.
2. make sure the fan is clean and freedom of movement is achived before and during the ride.
3. make sure you are full on coolant
4. get a temp gauge ... this will warn you before you get into trouble.

I've found most overheating sportsman are due to not keeping the radiator clean ... people think they cleaned it, but most of the time when you remove the rack and hood ... you'll see the radiator is 50% clogged.

 

I must admit I didnt remove the screen....Thanks for the Tips ....
The Factory Temp gauge work great....
Now I just need to find a damn fuel gauge..I can't believe that Polaris didn't put a fuel gauge on my 600

welcome to the forums orphanmaker. what year 600 twin do you own. the 04 500/600/700 did not come with the Electronic fuel gauge with low fuel flasher on the early models but they did on the 04.5 designation model year. this is why there is an 04.5 model year and an 04 model year for 2004.

I have not taken my "screen" off to clean my radiator either. what holds the "screen" on, is it a pain in the butt to remove?

NOt sure if it has a Low Fuel Light ...NOt let it get that low ....
I going to work on it in a few days...I'll let you know ...I just know that I hated sitting in the trails while peps flew by me while I waited to cool down ....talking about pissed 1!!!!

I have a 03 700 and a 05 800 EFI. THe 700 was my first ATV and i was crazy with it. I went through everything, EVERYTHING! I had overheating problems for awhile and the honda and yamaha guys gave me crap. Well, i took the wheels and front rack and plastics off. My biggest problem was that a ton of mud was caked on the BACK of the radiator, especially in the corners hidden by the fan shroud. I haven't overheated since i cleaned the back of it. BUt like everyone said, you need to clean the radiator. A dirty one is your number one problem if you're muddin'.

 

The screen is held on by a few screws ... depending on how many trees you've run over ... it could be hard to remove or easy [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

The screen just pops out, no tools needed. look in your manual.
