Default 98 300 running crappy...help please

My machine has really started to hesitate when you open up the throttle, but seems to be fine at low speeds. I drained the float bowl thinking maybe I had a condensation problem but that didn't help. I don't see any obvious problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

How long since you changed the spark plug? A plug going bad will do what you describe as the gap opens up and the edges round off. I change my plugs once a year in the spring, very cheap and then you never have an old plug. Could be something else, but I would start there.

I would also check for a dirty air filter. It don't take much restriction to lose power.

Best to eliminate all the easy stuff first. Pull the air filter and clean it, pull the carb and clean it out (take it apart and clean), replace the spark plug, and probably go ahead and adjust the valves. If its not running good after that, then at least you know all the simple things are taken care of. Generally one of these things will take care of most small (but typical) problems, and its something you can do yourself, or won't cost that much to have done.

I would focus on the carb getting cleaned out. Could have a high speed jet dirty. I'll bet its a simple fix though.

Thanks for the posts.

I hadn't yet put a new spark plug in because I put a new one in just a few hundred miles ago. That's seems to have done the trick. I think I'll still clean the carb though.

Nope, haven't cleaned it yet. I'm waiting for some carb cleaner to arrive. The local store didn't have any, nor does it have much of anything. I live in a little fly-in village in Alaska so when things go wrong with the ATV or snowmachine, I usually have to mail order parts.
